Easter-Egg-like thing regarding alien names

Yes, I posted this on a Pokemon forum before I posted it here, go figure. Am I the only one who noticed that the alien names were a bit too linguistically valid? It sparked my curiousity, and I ended up finding some interesting things. There are still some gaps to fill here. Grunts - Unggoy - Unggoy means "Monkey" in Tagalog, as I have confirmed with a Filipino IM contact. Jackal - Kig-Yar - I have no idea. It does get non-halo hits on Google though. Hunters - Lekgolo - Lekgolo means "One Hundred" in Tswana according to an online cross language dictionary. Elites - Sangheili - No clue Brutes - Jiralhanae - Jiralhanae means "To Become A Retarded Lunatic" in Korean, according to an alternative online dictionary made by someone in the PDRoK. I have a RoK contact who I will question about this. Drones - Yanme'e - This is just a guess, but is this Japanese? I seem to remember a similar Japanese word which was used in context in English, but not what it was. Savant/Engineer (Why are these in "Conversations from the Universe" but not in the game?) - Huragok - Some searching seems to indicate this is a Hili-blam!-non word. I cant really be sure though, and dont have the slightest clue what it might mean. Any assistance would be welcome~ This, along with that coded message from the Minister of Truth, is genuinely part of the fun I gotten from Halo 2. Bungie was rather clever with what they have managed to conceal here. If anyone has the knowledge to better clarify the situation to me, I would be elated.

  • Nice going there! And thanks for the translation of the Prophet translation as well. I was bored last night and i gave it a look through and my god! Some of the replacements for vowels were terribly annoying... But anyway, i was just wondering if you know anything about what on earth the "Sharquoi" is? It's mentioned somewhere in the mini conversations booklet thingy doodaamabob in connection with the Covenant closing in on Earth. Is it a weapon? Or a new race perhaps?

  • Im just wondering something about the hunters though, then: Why are they always in pairs? How are they tamed and controlled? Oh, and anyone willing to help me fill in the blanks, feel free to do so!

  • The name "Lekgolo" meaning "One Hundred" for the Hunters makes perfect sense... apparently, the Hunters are not "sentient life" as the Flood would need them to be in order to make them hosts. Hunters are actually a collection of appendage-less worm-like creatures that join together in order to form one huge, formidable beast. Sounds weird, but when they all go together, they form a single whole that's pretty much spine-less. That's why "One Hundred" makes perfect sense. It's about a hundred little wormy dudes making one big ol' Hunter. ...That's why the Hunters don't seem to have much of a head, and also why you never see any Flood Hunters. Since they're not invertebrates, they really don't have much of a calcium store, which means they "taste bad" to the Flood. Flood just don't like 'em. And although the symbiance of the Hunters is a strange thing to look into and grasp, they are aliens after all. And ya gotta give Bungie some creativity points for that one.

  • Since I still require assistance in the act of sucessfully manifesting workable results from this research, I hereby provide this redundant request.

  • [quote]Thats pretty good info. I believe i heard somone mention that the language used in the letter from truth had arabic roots... dont know if thats new to you, or if its of any use.[/quote] You heard wrong. The message was English with something very similar to substitution chipher, but IIRC the vowels are also used as constonants, which makes it more confusing. Someone on the net already translated it. http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=156452 [quote]To thine own eyes, Prophet of Mercy Dearest Brother I hope this finds you well. My sorrow and anger (precede?) me with regard to the atrocity and heresy at Halo. We shall avenger this destruction with some of our own. Work proceeds apace on our battle plan. The Sangheili (Elites) will do what is asked of them, and the Jiralhanae (Brutes) will show the Humans what our strength looks like at close quarters. But this message concerns neither the (planning?) nor the discovery of the Human homeworld. Rather I question Brother Regret's suitability for this great purpose. I am aware of his tenacity and ambition, but I believe his youth and feckless reaching may prove to be grave risks to the perfection of this undertaking. You have noted his rashness in the past, and yet neither of us has acted. I suggest that we continue as planned, but we would both do well to pay mind to Brother Regret, and provide wisdom and guidance as needed. This matter is too important to be left to inexperienced hands. Piety is no substitute for wisdom. Perhaps I worry too much. You know that I embrace caution, but we cannot have inexperience or arrogance at this great juncture. Be pure, be vigilant, and never rest. By my own hand[/quote] EDIT: Quote tags unlike phpBB [Edited on 11/16/2004 9:13:29 PM]

  • Thats pretty good info. I believe i heard somone mention that the language used in the letter from truth had arabic roots... dont know if thats new to you, or if its of any use. also, the DVD that came with the special edition said something about the engineer/savants being removed (which gave me a surprise to see them in the conversations booklet).. They said something about not being able to get the physics down.. or something but apparently they had a textured model already... more proof in my eyes that the game was rushed through production..

  • Are you living in the Phillipenes at the current time? Do you know anyone who might speak Hili-blam!-non? Perhaps a university professor or something? I would like to get this cleared up.
