It seems I'm having a very different experience with the game than most...

I'm a software developer in my 30s. I work all day, come home, hit the gym or go for a bike ride, make dinner, and take care of the dog. After dinner, I boot up the PS4, create a party with 4 to 6 of my friends... work friends, childhood friends, friends I've just met... We hop in a PS4 party, then we all load up the game. We battle through all of the game's missions together. We take on the strikes. We take on the queens wrath missions. We're working on building up our light levels. We do patrols and bounties, and we all enter the Crucible together. I am having an absolute blast playing Destiny with my friends. Maybe the difference is that I have a dedicated set of friends whom I can play the game with that make it so much fun, but reading through this board is very interesting to me. It seems that many of the people writing here are having a very different experience than I am having. Is it simply because I'm playing with my friends that I find what the developers at Bungie have given us so entertaining?

  • No fortunately your experience isn't unique to just you, those having just as much fun as you are are just playing the game rather than posting here in the forums. You can check out the thread that has the poll of opinions on Destiny and a vast majority seem to be enjoying it. It definitely helps with friends though, I have several groups of friends who in turn have their groups of friends so this allows us to meet new people and always have someone to play with. Myself and another one of my friends I always play with have become notorious among our group for taking the graveyard shift to play so usually we get hit up to play at night since people usually know we are on.

  • Deffo best enjoyed with friends. Overcoming a tough challenge or random funny moments are always better experiences when shared. Also easier to herd acolytes backwards off a cliff with friends.

  • People are disappointed with it because Bungie flat out lied about content and withheld completed content in order to charge us for it later. People are paying the same for this game but we're getting less content than games from 10 years ago had.

    • Partly, but I think the main reason is, people didn't know exactly what they were buying. Sure the story itself is bare bones, but the rest of the game is pretty solid. Music is epic sounding, the areas look beautifull, and the gunplay is enjoyable. A.I. is also good. The biggest gripe I see people have is either with the story, which is bad " could be helped if they added the grimoir to the actual game though" and pvp balance. The pvp is where I think people did not understand what they were gonna get. The game takes pages from both FPS games and MMORPG games. The combat is FPS but the pvp is more like MMORPG. What I mean by that is, in a MMORPG playing pvp without good gear is not a good idea, as gear has a major impact on how you play. A high lvl player is going to have better stuff then a low lvl player. Even if they balance out dmg and def stats the actual abilities of gear will still give people an edge. I think people expected pvp like halo, or bf, or cod. When it is in fact closer to an MMORPG in that regard. Gear plays a big role. Now of course a skilled player even if low lvl and under geared can do well, but he will not have the same edge. Personally I enjoy this as I am burnt out on the normal FPS pvp games, and this is a nice change of pace as i love MMORPG games even more.

    • I think there is a very vocal minority at work on the B.net. I am having a blast and all the people I play with are enjoying it as well. Even if things were changed or whatever people are going on about, what I paid for was well worth the money...and that includes the Dinklebot. I am with you OP. Hopefully things simmer down but if they don't I will still be having fun.

I'm a Software Engineer for Siemens Healthcare (working on PET/CT scanners, fascinating stuff) and have a 12 month old daughter and amazing wife to add to the mix as well. Trying to transition my exercise time to my lunch hour, but I digress. My friends and I have an absolutely great time playing on PS4, so if you're interested we should game sometime too! :)

      • Let's talk software, you in java, .NET or something else? 😎 Regarding Destiny, I try to avoid it if I know I'll be playing on my own but with friends it's great fun. Still, I hope Bungie can do much better...

      • You need to add the word "here" to your subject. This place is NOT indicative of the Destiny player base as a whole. Forums represent a fraction of a fraction of the players. And I agree with just about everything you said. Friends make it much more fun.

      • Don't sweat it, most of the people in your shoes don't frequent the forums. Forums, for the most part, are almost always full of white knights and haters. I'm playing Destiny flat out and I'm still having a blast. You're not alone.

        • I beleive it is because alot of these other people don't have real life friends to play with. I have a group of 3 who i play with each night and i love this game. Right with you man.

        • I spent a good chunk of time reading your post and the comments as well. I am a hardcore lone wolf in video games, and Destiny has actually been a blast for me. However I am getting quickly bored with the lack of things to do, and the requirements of needing other players to further use the content. It then got me to thinking about your perspective of having an absolute blast with your friends. I have come to the conclusion that Bungie has only ever played Destiny from your perspective. They do not know how it feels to go through the entire game as a lone wolf. But can you blame them? They are obviously a very close and goofy bunch of people who only really have interaction with the game either in their work setting or with their friends and families. Also, Destiny is the game they always wanted to make. People complain Destiny is too similar to Halo. I personally choose to think Halo is too close to Destiny. If this is the game that they always wanted to make, then of course your going to see these ideas leaked over into their future and past games. So overall - I am not disliking my play experience, nor am I mad at Bungie. I realize that this game is intended to be played by multiple people, and I'm the only one dampening my play experience by my choice to play solo. I just hope that Destiny will continue to be a blast because no one I talk to plays on my console and I highly dislike online interactions. Be Brave Guardians!

        • You're just easily entertained and that's ok. Destiny is the bare minimum, it's cool if you enjoy it but the problems people have with the game are pretty obvious. Your post sounded a little too much like an ad as well.

So I've been thinking about this too...I believe that most people would agree the game is fun. It is great and I love it. That's not the issue here. The negativity stems from the enormous amount of hype and unrealistic expectations that were placed on the game before launch. I can't help but wonder if this is a rare case where less marketing would have served the game better. When Destiny doesn't have to live up to the impossibly huge pre-launch expectations it reveals itself as the awesome game it is.

            • You nailed it. I am so bored with the game at this point, that outside of daily challenge I don't even play by myself. It feels like a chore and going through same levels and strikes over and over is not so much fun by one self. BUT When I am with friends I couldn't care what I'm doing, even if it's same strike 3 times in a row! It just make that much difference. So while I don't fault the game fo being a drag, there is not much to do by oneself past that LVL20 and beating story....

              • You don't have a different experience than most. You just have a different experience than half of the people in the forums. :D Every online game has three types of people. Those who offend the game on the forums, those who defend the game on forums, and those who just play the damn game.

Yeah I noticed this too. I'll admit, i was a litttle sad to see how short the storyline was for its final release. Plus the missions are a little repetitive and can get dull when you are playing by your lonesome. But I enjoy the game for what it has to offer. I think the graphics are rather beautiful to look at and the voice acting doesn't make me want to mute the tv. I love the idea of being able to team up with people and pal around with them. We mess around a lot so it makes the game a lot more fun. Entering the crucible with your friends is also fun. (And I am not a PVPer) Plus hearing the commentary about you being placed on the opposite team is also amusing. Though I think the best part of the game for me is, exploring. I love being able to run around an open world game, just looking for caves and tunnels I can get lost in.
