Still counting out the days of this lockout too. I find myself wondering how I spent most of my days before Destiny, I theorize its not that I spent most of the day playing, its just that now that I can't, there's nothing else I want to do. Not going to post my PSN here because I've done so enough times (as well as being the OP of the first thread they recognized), but I'm going to take a swing at answering your questions for those who may be curious or would like to have a discussion EDUCATED GUESSES 1) You can sometimes view your guardian's when you are not authenticated through your account, however no matter what you do when signed in you cannot. This leads me to believe that there is an error in something that is not shared unless you are authenticated, such as your inventory. So when your profile queries for all the information it errors on finding your items/vault causing it to fail. 2) The hotfix itself isn't the source of the issue. The hotfix (defined by their patch notes) only made changes to game variables., not affecting accounts in any direct way. The hotfix caused me no troubles for the previous hours of play. This situation seems to be an isolated incident only affecting people from a current timeframe (91 hours ago as of right now). What happened to me 91 hours ago was the servers kicked me back to orbit to which I immediately recognized a rollback to my character (was playing a low level character and was rolled back a level). During a short period following this kick (a server hiccup from my understanding) people experienced bugged items (engrams, weapon upgrades, etc) which would not save once changed (deposited, upgraded, decoded). This lead me to believe there was a de-synchronization between the game client and the server. When our client tried to update our data on the server parts of it were failing and caused corrupt entries in their database. So now when we try to load our characters (from game or our profiles) the call to the database is, a) failing or b) retrieving an unexpected response. Either way the game/site is not equipped to handle the response (throws an error) and that's how we got where we are. COMPLETE SPECULATION BELOW 3) My best guess is their first response was to identify the errors and try and find commonalities to which they could right a query to apply globally to their database to try and solve the problem. I imagine they've done quite a few by now slowly fixing things little by little. However I imagine many accounts suffer from multiple different kinds of corruption, so one query wouldn't fix many accounts, only parts of them. Now of course this leaves the option of individually fixing the accounts, however this is no easy task either. While you can pull up the entire accounts information, this is likely a bunch of numbers and some strings which you have to sift through and find corrupt/conflicting entries. Now corrupt/conflicting entries aren't some big red flag most likely, its probably a subtle issue with 1 number being off or a case of two items (not necessarily literal items) conflicting and having to figure out which entry is the valid one. COMMENTARY 3b) Going for the macro approach to solve as many accounts as you can at once is the most optimal solution. It is the least hassle and the quickest, and this part is important, given you can find a way to do so. Here in lies their problem: They can't find a way to fix it on a macro level. It is likely they are still trying to because of the number of affected accounts. It's kind of a gamble. Either you take the extra time to fix accounts on an individual basis (long) or you continue trying to find a macro to fix all accounts (short). If the team that is working on fixing the issue is confident they are progressing towards a macro then they will continue to try and do so. If they fail to do so in a period of time (some arbitrary decision) then they will default to a micro level to fix accounts on a per user basis. So my question (if my speculation is correct) is "When will you be working on a per account basis/Have you already?". 4) There are two parts as I see it. There's what allowed this to happen and what happened. To solve similar issues in the future they just need to know what caused this to happen and stop that. However knowing what happened (fundamentally understanding the flaw and its consequences) gives a deeper insight into the prior. A comprehensive understanding of both would be ideal, however identifying the vulnerability and patching it is really the only required course of action. My hope is that have already identified the cause and have "patched it" so that it will not happen again and put in place (or plan to) fail safes in case it does. I really have no authority to answer these questions, this is just my speculation as a com sci major and from previous experience developing, managing plugins and writing scripts for game servers. Hope those of you who took the time to read this found something to take away from it. I really do hope Bungie can give us some official information pertaining to these questions, but we most likely won't see any until it's fixed. It's a bigger PR nightmare (usually) if you cannot deliver on what you've said rather than stay silent until the issue is resolved. EDIT: On another note for fixing per account, there are so many posts made in threads about this issue that are for general connection issues. This is hurting us legitimate cases because we are being buried by misleading and irrelevant posts. Firday ( approx 20 hours after the incident) i made my post about all the information I collected and got a couple hundred replies. Even a portion of the people replying to my thread were unaffected by the issue. Taking into consideration there are 2000+ comments on Bungie's official thread, there is likely a lot more irrelevant posts (percentage wise). I want to preface that this is not a bash to Bungie, but as the situation stands, not only is Bungie failing us, so is the rest of the community and that is just the sad fact.

Very well written post, sounds about right. The Educated guess section is exactly what happend to me and honestly - if Bungie would made such a statement couple of days ago - many ppl wouldn't be whining and reposting their account countless times in various threads - like metnioned below by aDeadSkinMask - a proper ticket system would make the whole situation much easier not only for the Team which (hopefully) is currently working on the soluton but also for the community as they would at least see things moving - at the moment most of the guys here thinks they just don't care - which is obviously not true. I'd gladly provide more information via PM to the support team to solve problems (not only) with mine account and actually play the game again. (It's been 4 days, yay!). Well, hopefully the team is at work already and trying to fix it most likely on per account basis but more importantly find out why and what exactly caused this problem so it won't happen again. I keep my fingers crossed, Bungie - I'm currently developing a mobile game in a team of 2 guys ( I know its a small game compared to your AAA title) but I can imagine how you guys must feel right now if there are ppl who bought the game and can't play because there is problem on your end.

  • A well thought out analysis. If Bungie posted something like this I'd stop whining and moaning. :D

  • Exactly what happened with my character. It was boots and a scout rifle. Had the roll back and got some coins instead. Ever since we have all been twiddling our thumbs waiting. Hopefully they post something today since it's a week day.

  • I guess we are just not one of the majority of accounts.

  • I hope that many people have gotten online since thursday and we just can't see it. I'd rather be the minority of people not playing than the minority of people able to play. (satire below) Our addiction is a simple case of substitution. Every time you want to play destiny replace it with something else. Anything. In my case its coffee. Every time I even think to turn on my PS4 I stop and go make a coffee. I may have just made my 6th cup of that day, but that's okay because I'm not addicted to Destiny anymore. Soon enough I won't even think about playing, just about drinking more coffee! I feel sorry for those whose accounts were rectified. The poor souls will never have a chance again to escape its evil, unhealthy and harmful grasp. I don't consider myself stronger than the next person, just fortunate I was able to offload my addiction onto a healthier habit like consuming caffeine. Knowing Bungie has one less person accounted for in their plan for world domination helps me sleep at night, or would if I wasn't consuming so much caffeine. I mean, hey, who needs sleep anyways? I urge you all to take my advice and begin substitution. Let this be the glorious revolution of the Golden Age! If you need any advice, help or a sponsor I offer my services. I believe in each and every one of you and hope that I may be the Shepherd that will guide you to the promised land. This suffering stops today and the revolution starts with you, so stand up and fight Destiny with substitution!

  • (read in the voice of the big brother narrator) Hour 114 without destiny. Endlex seems to have gone insane off a caffeine addiction. Goon411 is in the diary room trying to get in contact with any of the bungie staff who help Endlex with his situation.

  • Great posts.. helps me cope with the current situation. I've decided to start a new character, so far I've had no errors. If I can still enjoy the game without an hitch until I reach level 20 again, I'll start equipping the gear I've got on my plagued character. For science!

  • Alright, I started getting errors on my other character. It's not the equipment.

  • Well thought out and written response. As a network admin not a coder I am no authority but your analysis seems sound. I do not envy the poor buggers who may end up checking out character code line by line. I would however dearly love to be able to log in and play. Perhaps a PM to those of us who have posted our info in that super thread asking for details? I know I could tell them which piece of gear I last acquired prior to my disconnect and subsequent Centipede infestation.

  • Thanks! Yeah I wish I could just PM out to a dev and give them some information which may make fixing my account easier. Hell I'd have let them delete the level 8 I was playing on Day 1 if it would have been an easier fix. Of course as soon as you open a line of communication it is flooded by other users whether legitimate or not, just look at their official thread for this. (reposts every few hours, Threats, wrong thread, etc). I like to visualize their inboxes as a website or server and all the community members as people DDoSing it. Makes me laugh because of the irony (maybe not using it correctly).

  • Agreed. A proper ticket submission system like most other MMO style games would make this whole thing much smoother. Then the help forum could be used for informal tips/tricks/pointers from one guardian to another.

  • I agree. However this is a consequence of a lack of foresight. Bungie had never needed this sort of system before, but clearly does now. Someone in the company probably brought it up, but unfortunately it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. I hope they invest time and money into a proper support team in the future.

  • Said it for your OP and I'll say it again, well put. I agree. To answer your question though they already said they were applying a fix on the per account basis and had applied it to the majority of accounts that had posted on your thread and theirs.

  • aha, I thought your name looked familiar! I just figured I'd been on the forum so much I kept seeing it other places. Then my last edit is probably more relevant to the per account state.
