Halo 2 still had the best multiplayer and foremost skill/matchmaking system to date so I don't get how you can compare the two. Noteworthy, the vast majority of people bought Halo 2 for multiplayer.
Destiny on the other hand was said to be an epic adventure and they always pointed at PvE and story as the main ingredients, seeing how there is no OW-PvP. It did not deliver.

I think you mean worst multiplayer and the smallest skillgap. It was pretty much Bungie's COD entry. Dumbed down for casuals that proceeded to cry when their massive bullet magnetism and auto aim were taken away from them in Halo 3. You know, the game that showed all these kids that thought they were hot shit the cold hard truth, they sucked shit at shooters.

Halo 2 was great. Halo 2's Matchmaking was great - you know, ranking up and down based on performance and not just how many hours you've put in, and Batzer is right about everything ever and you smell

Yeah standbying, lagswitching, and modding to rank up sure took a lot of in game skill.
Halo 3 had the same system, only without the atrocious casual catering multiplayer tacked on.
halo 3 was gay Modding was fun for Custom Games (Guns that shoot trains.....nuff said) though I will admit it was lamesauce when someone did in Matchmaking Those problems aside, Halo community was never better than Halo 2, Maps were never better, and colours on your rank; they were coool

You could standby and lagswitch in Halo 3 too. Modding was harder though. But looking at the intended core product, the only thing that can be argued to be better in Halo 3 was the toned down auto aim. And it's not like auto aim was the determining factor in Halo 2 anyway, only a small minority went +35. Everything els was worse in Halo 3 - worse maps and far worse skillsystem. Ironically it's still the second best online multiplayer game, way ahead of third. I'm not even sure what the third best game out there would be because they all lack proper matchmaking systems. I guess Reach, for atleast putting some effort into it, or R6V (1) by having some great maps.
