Hacking, in the gaming industry, is defined as modifying or changing a specific set of parameters of a game or gaming system to give you an advantage. The lag switch was created when somebody realized short connection drops would give them an unfair advantage in a game where they are the host. So they created a device that duplicated these errors. Lag switchers gained a huge advantage. The same thing goes for modding. Modders found weaknesses in the game's code that allowed them to insert their own codes in order to gain an advantage. Farming is like this, only on a much smaller scale. Instead of messing with the parameters of a connection or inserting a code, farmers are manipulating the conditions and parameters of the enemy spawn system to give them an advantage. This is done by finding the perfect spot to prevent the spawn of surrounding enemies. This is achieved by taking advantage of the the boundaries of "spawn fields". This map is surrounded by an invisible "spawn field". If players are within this spawn field, then the enemy does not spawn. The example above shows the spawn fields of the now-defunct "loot cave". Players would specifically position themselves within the spawn field of the crashed hive ship while staying out of the spawn field of the "loot cave", thus ensuring they have an easy advantage over the hive. They manipulated the parameters of the game to give them an advantage. Thus, this is hacking. That's all hacking really is, manipulating the game to give you an advantage the developers never intended. The "loot cave" may now be defunct, but there are plenty of spots similar to it in Destiny.
