It was added in 1954 during the Red Scare. It was believed that communists were all atheists, snd therefor adding god would inoculate our children against communism by adding God and country early. Communism is long past defeated and we have a pluralistic society where people worship many Gods, and atheism is not a communist idea. Its not an old tradition. It doesn't apply to a large group. We should end it.
