It was added in 1954 during the Red Scare. It was believed that communists were all atheists, snd therefor adding god would inoculate our children against communism by adding God and country early.
Communism is long past defeated and we have a pluralistic society where people worship many Gods, and atheism is not a communist idea.
Its not an old tradition. It doesn't apply to a large group. We should end it.

I don't understand why it isn't "Under Lord Helix".
-
1 ReplyIt violates the separation of church and state... -Public school = State -"Under god" = Church "Under god" + Public school = violating the constitution

Communists, communists everywhere!!

4 RepliesOnly when atheists outnumber everyone else.

Assuming we're saying the pledge at all, I agree with you.
-
1 ReplyWe should remove the entire pledge. Pledging allegiance to a flag is just creepy.
-
I'm Christian but the weird thing is I don't even think of God when saying the Pledge. You know, the many times I actually say it now that I'm out of high school.
Communism is long past defeated
i don't think so...lol an idea is never long past defeated in my opinion. it eats away at the consciousness of citizenry until it wells up and overtakes the masses through false promises and misguided hope. It is only "back" when it is too late...but I would not say it is ever "gone." There is no "mission accomplished" with communism...

I concur, we should pledge to William Wallace!

It doesn't bother me either way. Just because God is or isn't mentioned in some pledge has absolutely zero effect on my spiritual life.

You are an affront to all Tyler stood for. He would point to the pledge as an empty ritual devoid of any purpose other than self gratification. God does not like you, never wanted you, in all probability he hates you. - T.D

I always thought it was weird. Like they taught us church and state should always be separated and yet, we said "one nation under God" and this is coming from a kid who was raised in a catholic house.

Tyler pls

2 RepliesFreedom of Speech. I will add "Under God" when I say the Pledge of Allegiance and if you don't want to say it, don't. Simple as that. You guys always try to find something to argue about. Next thing you know, you guys will start arguing about taking "In God We Trust" off of money.

God is real and great you'll see one day

It does defeat the purpose of separation of church and state when religious things are in/on state related things. What makes it even worse is that it's favoring one religion other the others. Since Christianity is the most popular religion in the US that one would be the one being favored other the others.

Edited by CoherentBadger: 9/26/2014 1:27:52 AMIf you have a problem with it just don't say the line. If you want to say it then say it. It's not mandatory that you say "under god". This is a pointless issue.
-
You don't have to say the pledge you know? I don't. One of my teachers explained why he didn't and after that it made complete sense. You're pledging allegiance to America, you promise to be loyal. What happens if you move out of the country somewhere? Your loyalty is most likely going to change. That's how I think of it at least.
