Article pretty much says it all. Legendary engrams are essentially not legendary with 60% becoming rares in this limited (but respectable) sample size.
Solution for all: Turn down the drop rate of legendary engrams and make them drop as legendary items more frequently (66% to 80% rate depending on cryptarch level). People don't get geared any quicker than they do now and it makes legendary engrams feel more special than they currently do.
Don't call this a gripe post. I have legendary stuff and have gotten some from engrams. It is a proposed solution to a weird mechanic of the game that could work better than it currently is.

these numbers are way too off. This is sadly too small a sample pool to accurately gauge the numbers. It also makes no mention of material. Which is just about the only thing Ive opened in my legendary engrams. Im not complaining about the levels, but a sample pool of 200 isnt big enough. Maybe if they farmed 1000 of each, it would start to get there.

1 ReplyAgree. I'm ok with a lower drop rate but a much much higher or guaranteed "turn into actual legendary" rate. The Cryptard is really starting to piss people off. After getting 7 legendary engrams and they ALL turn into blues worse then what you have equipped it starts to get extremely frustrating. When you BUY your way to becoming legend instead of earning it on an epic quest in the wilderness with friends it's a little awkward.

5 RepliesLast 2 days my Cryptarch started decrypting more and more blues into greens... and I think it is over lvl 10. Anyone else noticed this?
-
3 RepliesSolid idea. Less legendary engram drops, more actual legendaries from the engrams. It would not make legendaries more common or easier to get. I think a lot of people commenting here don't understand this bit.

6 RepliesAfter the whole Zoe Quinn and #GamerGate fiasco, I'm not touching Kotaku. I do agree with your solution, though.
-
Can my ledgendary engrams just become ascendant shards. Im already geared just need shards to level up.
-
1 ReplyI'm fine with earning my legendary gear. I wish more of them turned to strange coins.
-
Ewww Kotaku. Get it away from me.
-
I wish all loot games worked like RotMG :/
-
Best logical solution I have seen.

7 RepliesThat is a good idea. At this point when I see Purple I think to my self, meh, it will be blue when decoded anyway. Also need to ditch the radar in PvP or at very least make it so only gunfire shows on radar. I'm tired of playing PvP and everyone camps. It is boring! PvP is the only reason I decided to rent this game instead of making it a purchase. Figure to be fair I will wait until end of Sept to see what plans they announce to fix the broken train wreck known as Destiny's PvP. If they fix it, I will purchase. If not, there are other games that will happily take my money.

4 RepliesNo, they are working as Bungie intended. To make it hard to get legendaries. They just aren't working how YOU want.
-
When more legendary gear hits the loot table then I bet those engrams will have a higher chance to turn. In a year or so we will be complaining they aren't turning into exotics often enough. This game has only been out what 2 weeks?
-
I have a feeling that it may be a little more complicated than that: My theory is that the higher the cryptarch level, the higher the chance of higher stuff. So, that percentage of chance of legendaries from a purple grows slightly with each level. The point of that would be so you start getting legendaries almost all the time, but only after your cryptarch is like near max level.
-
1 ReplyI got an exotic rocket launher callet the truth today from my third legendary engram, I must be really lucky even though those two other engrams turned out as blue items
-
2 RepliesLegendary Engrams have a higher chance of giving you Legendary Gear than Rare Engrams do. That's how it works. Nobody complains that you can also snag Exotic Gear from Legendary Engrams, albeit at a lower rate. There are no guarantees with Engrams... Isn't that the point?
-
1 ReplyEngrams should change colors like the item boxes from Mario kart.
-
2 RepliesThey are working as intended. Legendary engram does not mean legendary armor. It means there is a chance for it to be exotic. The color of the engram is not supposed to show what will be decoded, it is showing that you have a chance of having better gear. If every legendary engram dropped a legendary for your class, bungie would make them spawn way less often. The system as it is works perfectly.
-
+1 good idea. I personally have never gotten a legendary from a legendary engram.
-
3 RepliesWhen legendary engrams drop for me I start trying to figure out if I am going to get a coin or crafting materials....................zero weapons or armor from any of them. I am almost to the point of just leaving them laying in the wastelands.

2 RepliesEdited by tangmcgame: 9/20/2014 4:56:32 PMYup. You have to randomly find one, it has to randomly be for a slot you need, it needs to randomly roll a legendary or better, and it has to randomly be for the class you want. Combined with their rarity in the first place, the poor rewards for running strikes, and the performance-agnostic crucible rewards, it's no surprise arguably exploitative farming methods catch on so widely. On top of an engram overhaul, I'd really like to see strikes become more worthwhile relative to time commitment, as well as selectable difficulties for targeted strikes and a loot table specific to each strike, where the incidence of finding those table is far higher and all other incidences of loot are not reduced.

I found 1 legendary engram, got an exotic weapon. It's 100% random dude, don't get butthurt.
-
The drops are just find. Wish people would just accept that's the way it is. I got exoctics and legendarys from the purple engrams.
-
24 RepliesGET YOUR CRYPTARCH LEVEL UP. Like seriously people have a level 4 cryptarch and wonder why their purple didn't turn into a purple
-
Edited by Aftrshoq: 9/20/2014 4:56:41 PMOnly thing i like about the purples is the amount of Cryptarch xp you get. So yeah, i like this idea. :)

2 RepliesI agree with this 100%. The problem is the anticipation, not the fact that people get blues. Make them be what they say they will be, and reduce the occurrence of the higher level drops. All problems solved!
