The Centipede and Your University.

Hey, Bungie Community. Day One of Destiny is behind us. We’re still hard at work to make sure all of you have a great experience. Thanks in part to chatter on our forums, we’re aware of some networking issues being experienced on college and university campuses. Our team is engaged in diagnosing the cause, but you might also be able to help. Members of the Bungie team will be contacting some of you directly to troubleshoot. Keep an eye on your Bungie.net inbox to see if you’ve been drafted as a test subject. If you don’t hear from us, we still love you and we’re still working to get you into orbit. Please continue to report any issues you experience on this forum. Watch this space for updates. UPDATE 1.0: We’re making progress toward a solution to the university network issue. A potential cause are security devices that don’t recognize Destiny network traffic. We’re in touch with the manufacturers of these devices to create an update that we hope will enable you to play. Stay tuned as work on this continues. In the meantime, it might be a good idea to learn the contact information for your network administrator. Stand by! UPDATE 2.0: We have isolated the issue and are working with security device manufacturers to release a fix this coming Monday, September 15th. Affected universities will need to apply the patch from the security device vendor to fix the problem. Once the patch is released, we’ll add details to this thread that you can forward to your network administrators. Stand by, be brave, and have a nice weekend. [b]UPDATE 3.0: We have determined the cause at the root of most of the issues being encountered on university campuses. We have been in touch with network admins at most of the universities listed on this forum (thanks again for helping us help you). In summary, there are network security devices that have been incorrectly identifying Destiny traffic as a bit-torrent. We have also reached out the manufacturers of the security devices in question. They've been awesome, and have released an update that will allow you to play on a network protected by their hardware. That update will need to be applied by your local network administrators, assuming they have not done this already.[/b] If you would like to put us in touch with the people in charge of your network, tell them to email us at universitynetworks@bungie.com, or provide us with their contact information. Do not post it here! We'll be working to solve every issue that blocks a Guardian from the Tower. Keep posting on this forum.

    University of Lincoln-Nebraska here, also having centipede issues. Any help would be appreciated and if there is anything I can do, let me know! UPDATE: Not sure what happened but I'm thankful it did, working just fine now!

  • Please fix the error codes! Mainly centipede that i've been hearing everyone is getting. Although in my case I am getting the coconut error. This happens after I go through character creation and watch the opening cutscene. I don't enter gameplay at all, it hits the error before anything else happens. Please fix these errors that everyone is getting so I can enjoy the game that myself and tons of other people have waited to play.

    [spoiler]Hello, DeeJ. As someone on university internet, I think I can help address this issue for some, as well as a workaround. Many universities have set up their internet to prevent things like video game consoles from being able to access them. The reason for this being is that consoles take up a lot of internet when there are hundreds on the same signals. It throttles the internet and costs the universities a lot of money. However, since you've already paid a few thousand dollars one way or the other, I'll tell you how to get around it. The firewall is what's keeping you out, so you need a device to deal with it. Your best bet is a computer that is connected to the wifi that is provided for you. Note: Macs seem to have difficulty with doing this. Now, follow these steps: 1. Go to "Network and Sharing Center" on your computer and then to "Adapter Settings"; 2. Find your wifi and right click on it. Go to properties and make sure sharing is allowed; 3. Use and ethernet cord. Plug one end into your computer and the other into your console; 4. Start up your console. You may need to test the connection to get it to work; 5. From there you should be set. Depending on the computer, you may be able to put it to sleep, but it needs to be on. Note: Do not create a network bridge. Doing so would still make your console have to deal with the firewall. Also, this may not work depending on your internet. Source for the above: I'm on the Xbox One. I haven't been able to try it with Destiny yet since it's still in the mail, but all this should work. [/spoiler] Edit: So, apparently this doesn't work for Destiny. I'm sorry to hear that since that means that I probably won't be able to play either.

    • Some chatter?? It's all over the place. I want to enjoy this game and have always loved Bungie games but this... Wasn't the beta a test for this?? I really have never had this much problems playing a game I know I would love... Now I just hate to love it... Don't let me lose that love Bungie!!

      I have an "issue." #Gaming has now become a 2nd #Destiny. But I doubt that'll ever be fixed with how things have been going here, so whatever.

      • Trying for 2 days now to get in the game and if i finally get in after a whole day trying and then i get kicked like 3 a 4 times every mission never played a single mission widout disconnecting weird thing is most crucible matches i can get in with almost no troubles i dont get this BS annymore Ps :never had problems with Beta so i pre order ghost edition to find out the game is almost unplayeble whats happend in that month

      • Ohio Northern University here, below is an email I got ahold of from our IT department to any interested in reading. "Right now we do not have the resources to work on this issue. The ticket may be reexamined later in the year after the high priority tickets are completed. The firewall blocks incoming connection attempts only. Applications such as games that don't work due to the firewall are likely attempting to publish services to, and accept unlimited connections from, the entire Internet. That is not allowed. Our Procera device blocks, via heuristics, a variety of protocols typically used in file sharing applications that would flood the network with large amounts of non-academic, non-business traffic and crowd out other users. Applications such as games that don't work may also be attempting to leverage such protocols. That is not allowed."

        • I have a unique problem that I can not seem to find anyone else having... The game will not let me play Crucible or any "Strike" because the game "thinks" I don't have XBL Gold. It is locking me from getting into those games even though I am POSITIVE I have XBL Gold. Each title for those says "Requirements Not Met" in red at the top and when I choose it, it tells me to upgrade to XBL Gold. I am a LVL 19 about to be 20 and have seen tons of REAL PEOPLE/ OTHER PLAYERS at the Tower and during regular story missions ALL THE TIME, just to prove I am actually playing online with others anyway (meaning I obviously have XBL Gold). I also play multiplayer on all of my other games with no problem, so it is obvious that it's the game's fault for thinking I don't have XBL Gold. It would be fantastic if you could remove the LOCK from those if you don't have XBL Gold. I understand the LVL requirement and it is not the problem. Please fix this so I can play "Control" and whatnot, I am restricted to online story modes for this reason and it would be fantastic to actually get use of the whole game. If anybody knows a solution for me or can think of why the game is not recognizing my XBL Gold, PLEASE let me know!!!!!!!!

              Worcester Polytechnic Institute, centipede issue is here (PS4). I've tried contacting our IT department to see what's up but if it's a Bungie-side issue...please fix it! I want to love this game

            • I keep getting Error Code: Chicken. I have uninstalled destiny, restarted, re-installed, and continue to get the Error Code: Chicken. I have confidence in Bungie to resolve the issue swiftly, but feel we as gamers at college should get some sort of virtual hug for our frustration. Love the game and will continue to play, once I can play again

              • Im getting so sick of this. I am at college but i live off campus in an apartment and i have my own router! I am getting nothing more than the stupid error message centipede and occasional chicken. Of course I can't contact bungie for any help because they don't offer help! Get a phone line for customers or else you guys mean nothing.
