The Centipede and Your University.

Hey, Bungie Community. Day One of Destiny is behind us. We’re still hard at work to make sure all of you have a great experience. Thanks in part to chatter on our forums, we’re aware of some networking issues being experienced on college and university campuses. Our team is engaged in diagnosing the cause, but you might also be able to help. Members of the Bungie team will be contacting some of you directly to troubleshoot. Keep an eye on your Bungie.net inbox to see if you’ve been drafted as a test subject. If you don’t hear from us, we still love you and we’re still working to get you into orbit. Please continue to report any issues you experience on this forum. Watch this space for updates. UPDATE 1.0: We’re making progress toward a solution to the university network issue. A potential cause are security devices that don’t recognize Destiny network traffic. We’re in touch with the manufacturers of these devices to create an update that we hope will enable you to play. Stay tuned as work on this continues. In the meantime, it might be a good idea to learn the contact information for your network administrator. Stand by! UPDATE 2.0: We have isolated the issue and are working with security device manufacturers to release a fix this coming Monday, September 15th. Affected universities will need to apply the patch from the security device vendor to fix the problem. Once the patch is released, we’ll add details to this thread that you can forward to your network administrators. Stand by, be brave, and have a nice weekend. [b]UPDATE 3.0: We have determined the cause at the root of most of the issues being encountered on university campuses. We have been in touch with network admins at most of the universities listed on this forum (thanks again for helping us help you). In summary, there are network security devices that have been incorrectly identifying Destiny traffic as a bit-torrent. We have also reached out the manufacturers of the security devices in question. They've been awesome, and have released an update that will allow you to play on a network protected by their hardware. That update will need to be applied by your local network administrators, assuming they have not done this already.[/b] If you would like to put us in touch with the people in charge of your network, tell them to email us at universitynetworks@bungie.com, or provide us with their contact information. Do not post it here! We'll be working to solve every issue that blocks a Guardian from the Tower. Keep posting on this forum.

    • Finally got a response from Ole Miss IT; I figured they wouldn't be helpful. "The Destiny servers use the same ports that P2P file sharing programs use. These ports are blocked for a reason, to prevent users using the Ole Miss network to pirate software or other copyrighted material. While I'm sure the networking team is looking into a solution, we have no ETA for a fix. "

      • I am a student at Franklin Pierce University, in New Hampshire. I have talked thoroughly with my IT department, I told them that Destiny wasn't allowing anyone on the campus to connect to the severs. The main error we get is "coconut". After you guys posted up a link on which ports to open to allow Destiny in, my IT department did so. I talked to them again today and they said it is still not working and allowing people to play. This cannot be from our end now Bungie. Please help us. Thanks

      • How do you get a refund for the Digital Guardian Edition( $90)? I don't think I can get one for it. Hopefully you have the issue resolved soon.

        • Please Bungie, help! I've been such a big fan for too long to have my hopes let down so hard. Do you see that list of schools that can't play?? That's not even close to all of them! So disappointed. Returning the game next week if it's not fixed.

        • Hi Bungie. It seems from all the reading I've been doing that the problems clear. Sooo, how about giving us, the people who keep you in business an update, tweet, email, telegram, wire ... something. It's understandable that there are issues but a little message to put our minds at ease will go along way. Finally, for the people who have had the game from day 1 (yesterday) and have had these stupid name errors like myself, Chicken, caterpillar etc. we should all be given a little in game gift, whether it's a skin for the ghost or glimmer. Thank you though for making a great game, from what I've been able to play for so far.

        • Good Morning, I have the best connection that is in Spain and is impossible to play more than two minutes, I called my service provider's Internet and I did all kinds of tests on the router to find a solution, opened ports, configure a static IP on my xbox one and did a DMZ, I can only change the router since it is in process and everything I've been doing these 3 days not for nothing. Pay 115 Euros for the game and took 3 days to try to play decently and play solamete I could come home from work yesterday for an hour without falls, but now back to the same. No reproaching anything I write because Bungie are sure that killing to fix it, but for the record that it is not only in universities and is no problem routers, ports, etc ... Cheers and good luck to us all: D

          This problem isn't university exclusive... I'm at home in Hong Kong and I'm getting centipedes all the time.

        • I am from belgium running on the best inet connection you can have in my country. But still get centipede error after 5 min. changed my ports and etc nothing helped. Can play every game online that i have on my pc & xbox all works only destiny not .... It's about time there come's a solution or i will bring the game back to the store and ask my money back! worked hard enouf for the money.

            Same problem again all day centipede but once it was 1 am here in belguim i could play again with 2 american friends whidout any problems the whole night so now the clock hits 8 am I GET THE SAME CENTIPEDE PROBLEM ALL OVER AGAIN this is the second day this happens how is this even possible what is happening wy can i only stay connected to servers AT NIGHT TIME please an answer or response posted like alot already

            • From the University of South Dakota, and I only received the centipede issue once, but I keep getting bee, and now it has come up with lion. I'm starting to get more than a little annoyed because this happens seemingly randomly. (and if i may say so, it seems to only happen when i'm doing well D;)

            • To those who live in [b]COPPER BEECH TOWN HOMES/ APARTMENT COMPLEXES ON OR NEAR COLLEGE CAMPUSES[/b]- I spoke to copper beech's IT department today asking about the issue. According to a nice fellow named Corey, they have received several complaints and are already in the process of altering their packets to allow for students who reside in their complexes to play Destiny! The issue is p2p related and they are well aware of the ports offered up by Bungie (Which they can't use due to security reasons as you all already know). Their technicians are in the process of a bypass but[b] it may take a few days or longer unfortunately. (They could not give me an ETA). [/b] So if you are one of the many like myself who are just off campus (GVSU- go lakers) in Copper Beech, just grip something tightly and be as patient as you can lol, YOUR DESTINY AWAITS BRO!
