The Centipede and Your University.

Hey, Bungie Community. Day One of Destiny is behind us. We’re still hard at work to make sure all of you have a great experience. Thanks in part to chatter on our forums, we’re aware of some networking issues being experienced on college and university campuses. Our team is engaged in diagnosing the cause, but you might also be able to help. Members of the Bungie team will be contacting some of you directly to troubleshoot. Keep an eye on your Bungie.net inbox to see if you’ve been drafted as a test subject. If you don’t hear from us, we still love you and we’re still working to get you into orbit. Please continue to report any issues you experience on this forum. Watch this space for updates. UPDATE 1.0: We’re making progress toward a solution to the university network issue. A potential cause are security devices that don’t recognize Destiny network traffic. We’re in touch with the manufacturers of these devices to create an update that we hope will enable you to play. Stay tuned as work on this continues. In the meantime, it might be a good idea to learn the contact information for your network administrator. Stand by! UPDATE 2.0: We have isolated the issue and are working with security device manufacturers to release a fix this coming Monday, September 15th. Affected universities will need to apply the patch from the security device vendor to fix the problem. Once the patch is released, we’ll add details to this thread that you can forward to your network administrators. Stand by, be brave, and have a nice weekend. [b]UPDATE 3.0: We have determined the cause at the root of most of the issues being encountered on university campuses. We have been in touch with network admins at most of the universities listed on this forum (thanks again for helping us help you). In summary, there are network security devices that have been incorrectly identifying Destiny traffic as a bit-torrent. We have also reached out the manufacturers of the security devices in question. They've been awesome, and have released an update that will allow you to play on a network protected by their hardware. That update will need to be applied by your local network administrators, assuming they have not done this already.[/b] If you would like to put us in touch with the people in charge of your network, tell them to email us at universitynetworks@bungie.com, or provide us with their contact information. Do not post it here! We'll be working to solve every issue that blocks a Guardian from the Tower. Keep posting on this forum.

  • I'm a Binghamton University student with centipede error. And we are all acutely aware that bungie is "fixing the problem". But can we at least get some actual information from Bungie? I don't give a frick if they're "working on it," I want to at least hear some sort of speculation on their part. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM BUNGIE!? NOT "ARE YOU TRYING TO FIX IT?".

  • I'm at Binghamton University. I emailed and called the IT department multiple times explaining that they just had to open the ports. The lady I've spoken to has said that it's more complicated than that, but I'm not convinced that's true. They also said they'd get back to me multiple times with some kind of update and still haven't, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were really just incompetent. I think the real problem is that I keep talking to the secretary and not the actual IT guys, and the secretary doesn't seem to care or have any clue what's going on. I'm curious if anyone's managed to open the ports and get a fix that way though, because then I would gladly be able to walk down there and explain it to them.

    • James Madison University has been experiencing wide spread centipede error. Called IT help desk and they said the only chance i have at fixing connectivity issue is contacting Bungie. Need help ASAP

      • I just spent 65 dollars on this game, for it not to work at all when i buy it? This is completely unprofessional for big title like this to just. "Not work" i keep getting centpede code, when will the fix for this at my university be resolved?

      • Hey Look it's T I also talked with the IT department on my campus and have been informed that if the issue is P2P there is no way for my university to fix it. i.e. the game is perma blocked unless Bungie can do something about it on their end. I can get in late at night and play for a long time until someone joins in and then I am booted with "centipede" or "chicken". What is confusing to me is why this isn't exclusively a University issue but also people who are running the game on home networks. I hope a solution is found soon, this game is incredible--if you can play it.

        • I contacted my school's network adminstrators, they said there is nothing they can do on their end and to just wait for Bungie to do something.

        • Im at Keene State and ive been constantly getting the centipede error, ive called and emailed my IT and they said they are working on a solution. Even though when I first called them all they told me was that id hae to give them my MAC address and they'd put it on the computer so it'll recognize it and allow Per to Per connection with Destiny. So far nothing has changed.

              • Thanks Bungie for starting to alleviate the problem!! My campus (Plattsburgh) announced that they absolutely will not allow a P2P connection for Destiny even though they've had anywhere between 75-100 reported problems. I want to play insanely badly, I got to play for 5 minutes because I tethered off my buddy's phone but 5 minutes isn't enough to enjoy this masterpiece. Hopefully Bungie can patch this up soon so the students at places who are denying them open ports can enjoy Destiny. Keep up the good work Bungie!

                    • Towson University is having this problem (centipede), too. I've been in contact with the IT department, but it would help if Bungie were in contact with me. I'm incredibly frustrated by this issue, and I'm very willing to try to help to get it fixed as soon as possible.

                      • Day 3 of no Destiny: I'm scared to close my eyes. Error codes are now entering my dreams.. no, nightmares. I'm beginning to hallucinate, too... Just saw a centipede crawl into a wall. Hopefully it doesn't come back. Oh no! Now there's two! Four! EIGHT! AHH THEY'RE CRAWLING ON ME! NOOOOO, WHY BUNGIE, WHYYYYY?!!!!

                        • So many centipedes. Tried 3 networks (Apartments, Dorms, General Campus, all different sources.) Wired, wireless. Centipedes all day. South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. I've e-mailed ITS, but I have no hope. The only place I can play is on an old modem in the kitchen across campus.
