Is it ok for parents to force their kids go to church?

Think of the possible consequences. They may become atheist later anyways (awkward) or satanists or join another religion regardless. Why should they be forced to go to a place that practically brainwashes them if they don't want to go? (And by "kids" I mean early teens- 17)

Yes. If you're a minor, you have to obey your parents until you're 18. What if the kid decides he doesn't want to go to school? What if he decides he doesn't want to eat veggies? It's a parenting decision and no one but the parents have the right to decide it.

    • My parents forcing me to go to church is one of the bigger reasons I became so resentful of it. I was already having doubts, and the way they threatened me to make me go made me even more skeptical and critical. Had they actually been respectful of my wishes, I probably would've gone once in a while out of curiosity and not of been so negative about it. So there's that.

    • Perhaps force the child to excel at his/her exam results and at least afford a C-grade. Then let them run around getting themselves heaps of [DEFAULT_VALUE=CURRENCY]. Rich. Then spend Rich on Space travel and then Mass Effect/Destiny/Halo all mixed up happens?

    • If everyone didnt have god forced on them at a young age before they can makw rational decisions on there own, there would be alot more athiests. Luckily I dodged that bullet, and could decide for myself and im thankful my parents gave me that freedom.

    • No, they should chose for them selves. Much like a anti/none religious also shouldn't be forced

      • I think kids should have exposure to church to see if they like it or not. If they don't want to go then they shouldn't have to go. Forcing them to go won't help them believe and usually makes them hate it. If they go and enjoy it then great. Thats what I'm going to do with my children.

        • They are there children, it is there Moral and values system, it is up to the child to decide after becoming an adult to remain or leave the faith. No one's opinion other than the parents matters in this situation. Anyone saying otherwise is ignorant to parenting and what it means to raise a child.

If you're young enough that your parents don't want to leave you home alone. Eventually I think they should allow you to make your own decision. They can't necessarily force you to believe in something past a certain point. If anything forcing someone to sit through church at a certain age will probably have the opposite effect on how a kid views religion.

            • I honestly didn't care. I was too young to know what the hell was going on and just sat on the bench twirling my thumbs for an hour.

            • No If they don't want to deep down from their heart, then it doesn't count either way.

              • Do we force them to sniff sharpies in order to make them dumber? No, so why should we force them to go to church?

              • If my parents forced me to I would just do incredibly rude things in church until they stopped taking me.

              • >Is it okay for parents to force their kids to go to church? Is it okay for me to smack the -blam!-ing mother-blam!-ers in their -blam!-ing stupid -blam!-ing dumb-blam!- faces? No. No it's not. Personally, my wife and I agree that our son will be raised knowing that religion in general is a thing, and if he asks to go to a church, or synagogue, or mosque, or what-have-you, then we will take him so he can learn. It will be of his own volition, though, not ours. That way, if he decides on a religion, or none at all, we know its because he made an educated decision (breaking the mold, what what!), and not because he's just following the herd.
