They did things very, very wrong. This textbook I'm reading explicitly states:
DO NOT MAKE A GAME THAT FOLLOW THE MARKET TREND; IT WILL NOT BE SUCCESSFUL
A bunch of other small stuff, but the good news is that the newer Halo games are following what I've read very well.

They nailed the visuals on the head, especially the cutscenes. I like Halo 4 but it could've definitely been better, especially gameplay-wise.
