Bungie Not Providing Review Copies of Destiny to the Press

Bungie isn't giving out review copies of Destiny until the day before release? How is the press supposed to put together a meaningful and thoughtful review in less than a day? I'm pretty excited for this game, but shutting out the media like this adds to the suspicion that maybe this game isn't as large as we are expecting.

  • They don't want to lose pre-orders from the bad reviews. This game is even more overhyped than Titanfall.

    • Its so they experience a living world rather than a dead one. Plus Bungie probably wants to avoid spoilers. I remember I had the UNSC Grafton exploding in Halo Reach spoiled for me like a week before the game came out because of the Gametrailers review. I also had the Onager spoiled for me. I'm glad that won't happen with Destiny.

    • I like the decision to make so called "Game reviewers" wait to get their hands on the game. Getting an unbiased, honest and reliable game review out of any media outlet nowdays is damn near impossible anyway.

    • Why should the press get anything before anyone else? Why can't we make our own opinion lol?

This is an evolving game that will take more than just a few hours of game time and a typed up paper to review. With things constantly changing in game, the review could be obsolete within a week. This is why a gaming news sources such as IGN are doing a "review in progress." The review will be changing and evolving just like the game in this format.

      • Most reviews suck anyway. I always wait for actual gamers to do reviews if I have questions about a game, not the media... Most of the media have no idea what they are talking about anyway most of the time.

      • Like it matters anyways... The servers won't be online until the 9th so it won't make a difference.

      •
How is the press supposed to put together a meaningful and thoughtful review in less than a day?
Wait you actually take reviews seriously?
I'm pretty excited for this game, but shutting out the media like this adds to the suspicion that maybe this game isn't as large as we are expecting.
I'd take a quality game over an unnecessarily large game anyway.

      • I am thinking that there are a couple of big secrets that Bungie doesn't want out in the public before launch..... Hopefully.

      • Lol. There's some videos of someone invoicing their white ps4. They got a disk copy of destiny too. I saw that about a week ago, so SOME definitely got it early.

      • Does it really matter? Leave the reviews to the gamers. Not the so called professionals who are being paid to write said reviews. In the end, sales and ongoing online participation will tell if Destiny is going to be as successful or as good as we are expecting. Man, I friggin' hope so.

consider the state of "games journalism," and the fact that "gamers" are shitheads, the appropriate response should be, "who gives a -blam!-"

As a note to people commenting on this...when you're dealing with a decent sized company this decision is often made by the PR side rather than the development side. So shitty as it is, I wouldn't conclude really anything about the game's actual quality from it. That stated...this happened with the sims 4 too. Not a good trend. Edit: Ah, it's because of the servers? And they're getting it on Friday? That's odd, but it definitely is better. They can get a real good feel for the campaign side at least, which is more of what I'm concerned with personally. Still yeah...would have been better if this wasn't the case, especially for people really interested in multiplayer. At least Bungie is still above EA's level.

        • It's a simple as Bungie wanting reviewers to review the game while experiencing a living world with players in it, instead of an empty one that feels underwhelming. It makes perfect sense

          • Good! I feel like these reviews sometimes start me off with a bias towards the game. Good or bad. This is one I want to play without ign or anybodys stupid damn opinion in my head. Clean slate.

          • I played the Beta, enjoyed the Beta, was amazed at how good the game felt, looked, and engaged me. It made me want to know everything I can about the story. In short: If you're one of the millions who played the Beta and came away skeptical, wait. Don't buy it at launch. Let someone else take your preorder and then decide after the livestreams and reviews go up later in the week (or month). It's a personal choice.

          • I've long since stopped relying on the reviews of others. Prime example? Operation Raccoon City. It is shitty, yes... But I intend to wade through and toss that shit everywhere nonetheless.

          • Though I actually find reviews helpful, (usually if a number of sites give the game a 4/5 or an 8/10 or above I will enjoy it to some degree), I kinda feel like dropping such an inclusive beta was evidence enough. And a decent way to review something like this is reviewing the product history of the company. And Bungie's history is impressive, all things considered.

          • Because the servers need to be up in order to play the game.

Heard about this, reminds me of the extended press embargo on the xbone around launch. Really sends a bad message, we know people are playing and testing on servers already running, so there is no reason for this other than they think the reviews will have a negative impact on sales. I'll be getting it regardless, but I'm really unimpressed by these kind of shady business tactics.
