Well I think your main limitation is that to play multiplayer, which split screen is, would require that both players to have PS+. PS+ is a requirement for playing multiplayer on the PS4. So is your family willing to get a PS+ for every member? I believe with Microsoft, anyone playing online is required to have a gold membership for Destiny. Remember Destiny is an "always online" shared world. Second limitation might be screen size. You have an always online connection with the servers most likely tracking the activity of every objective and player on that server. Not your console. The tethering part? Screen resolution may be used to help determine object / player locations for these servers and everything is programmed to that specific screen resolution. The rendering part? Going split screen changes that resolution and forces the server to do double work with two different screen resolutions. The lower resolution may not be as good in determine location which for pvp would be a bad thing. I just don't see split screen coming since this is an always online game.

  • 1. With both PS4 and XB1 if one account on the console has gold, all accounts have gold. 2. Screen size isn't a problem for splitscreeners, and technically the playstation 3d tv takes care of that problem. 3. Tethering isn't a problem either, pvp maps are small, and in open world you can have invisible walls or even simpler, a teleportation system. 4. The resolution is only 1080p, so gamers are used to lowered graphics when it came to splitscreen. 5. The next gen consoles are 10X more powerful than last gen, so they can handle it. (and by your definition, it sounds like you're saying no console is able to do splitscreen.) Halo 5 and Master Chief is on XB1, and will have 4 player splitscreen. And at single player it will be 1080p 60fps. 6. Again, pvp isn't a problem people are used to it. 7. All because a game is all online doesn't mean it can't have splitscreen. There is no rule to it.

  • Jonny, I don't feel qualified enough to discuss most of the points you made but I will refer to your #1 and #7 items. Besides Bungie moving to an always online game with no split screen, Ubisoft is also doing the same thing with their two or three upcoming titles for 2015. While you say there is no rule, this appears to becoming the industry standard for future gaming with Sony's and Microsoft's blessing. Why? Money. I was looking through the Sony FAQ for PS+ and online multiplayer and it says up to four people can be simultaneously log into the same PS4 and have access to multiplayer. What it does not say is if 4 people can be logged in into the same console and the same game. I don't have any games to test it. I wouldn't be surprised with the industry move to always online and being connected to a Sony or Microsoft gaming network and their servers, I bet neither company wants more than 1 user online at the time for a single console with a PS+ or Gold account. If you want to play together, you'll each need a PS+ or Gold account on your own console for always online access. So this is my thought as to why you will not get split screen. No reason to have it if the always online game, Destiny in this case, is only going to have one user per console connecting to the game. I may be wrong but I'd keep my eye for all future AAA games coming out and seeing if they are following this new standard. If so, I doubt there will be split screen for Destiny 2 either.

  • Well, Halo 5 is an open world all online game, with 32 on 32 pvp, with splitscreen. All online. With splitscreen. 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYYlYbHhgGM I've done splitscreen on Xbox with multiple accounts logged in. Playing multiplayer.

  • While I can sympathize with you about split screen and see what is possible, when I did some searching last night on why Destiny doesn't have split screen, I came across various articles saying that more and more games are doing without split screen. Maybe it makes porting to PC easy. The easier it is to port back and forth between consoles and PC, the less costs for the developer. Can't say for sure. But what I am seeing is that you are trying to fight against the wind for this gaming industry change. It's going to happen and with how well Destiny appears to be selling, it doesn't matter to a lot of people. They are more than willing to buy the game without split screen. Destiny looks like it will become the poster child for games without split screen. Best of luck with trying to get the change to happen.
