They were transformed by the Darkness
They were transformed by the Traveler
They were transformed by some other means
I'm beginning to get very curious about the awoken. Maybe more speculation will make September 9th come faster! "It is said that the Awoken were born in the Collapse, descended from those who tried to flee its wrath. Something happened to them out on the edge of the deep black, and they were forever changed. Today many Awoken live in the distant Reef, aloof and mysterious. But others returned to Earth, where their descendants now fight for the City. Earthborn Awoken sometimes venture out to the Reef, hoping to learn its secrets — but they find no special welcome from the reclusive Queen." -Awoken Grimoire So curious. What's your pre-launch theory?!
My best guess is that, when the Awoken were transformed, they saw the nature of both the Traveler and the Darkness – thereby being "awoken," or having the true nature of their struggle unveiled. Exhibit A: the Awoken Queen has Fallen bodyguards. What if, in the Reef, there are species attributed to both the Traveler and the Darkness working together as a neutral faction? Perhaps not wishing to partake in the war between Light and Dark? Exhibit B: We know that many Awoken returned to Earth to fight with the forces of the Traveler. Perhaps having seen the aforementioned "true nature" of the war, they chose to fight for the Traveler. If this was out of free will, then this theory would imply that there are Awoken who joined the Darkness, as well.
