OP, as you said yourself, 10 years for a character. New content is going through March next year. There is likely a whole year between then and Destiny 2. No idea what is coming next. Maybe character evolution.
If you plan to stick around for 10 years, then you have to look at this as just the beginning of the journey. Hopefully lots to discover along the way.

I know that's their plan, but I don't know that I'm happy about how that's affecting their delivery of options at release. It's like the release-day-DLC theory taken to a 10 year extreme. I don't want character build variety 10 years from now, I want it when I buy the game.

Understood. Since this a game built from the ground up and it's priority seems to be variety of gameplay and challenges and variety of loot to go do those challenges, I guess you will have to go with your approach of reminding yourself it is a just shooter. And Bungie has stated several times in articles that it is a shooter first.
