The link above is uncompressed footage of MGSV:PP and is in full 1080p/60FPS. Watch it, try not to cry.
Edit: Just finished MGS 3. DEM FEELS. Going to start PeaceWalker tomorrow, probably. Hopefully I can finish it by Sunday and then start GZ on Monday.
I've never played any MGS games before, and yet I'm somehow so excited for this game.
I'm going to buy Ground Zeroes before I pre-order.
If I like Ground Zeroes, which MGS games would I have to play in order to understand what's going to happen in the Phantom Pain?

1 ReplyI should really get into MGS. I have 2/3/PW on my vita and my brother bought MGS4 for me.

7 RepliesSnake Eater is my favorite MGS and easily among my all time favorite games ever. That last boss fight was -blam!-ing ridiculously good and emotional. To fully understand the events of The Phantom Pain you'll need Snake Eater, Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes. Keep in mind Peace Walker was originally a PSP game so it is limited compared to other titles, although still a lot of fun. Ground Zeroes basically gives you a snippet of what is to come, especially gameplay wise. The new mechanics are amazing. Stealthy action has never felt this good before and the game is gorgeous, although with some little issues here and there. When I saw the 2013 E3 Trailer for TPP I went absolutely crazy and bought the HD Collection soon after. I had played MGS4 already before years ago but never got into the series. I'm so happy I finally got into it. Such a god damn good franchise.

6 RepliesMgs3 then peace walker But if you want full comprehension just buy the whole box set for ps3

1 ReplyIs it because of Quiet?
-
4 RepliesI'm going to pick up a cheap PS3 and a cheap MGS Legacy Collection. MGSV looks absolutely brilliant, and I need to play it.
-
24 RepliesMGS V annoys me tbh. It looks like it's gonna be a great game but you have to play through about 5 movies just to understand the story even a little bit. It's just not worth it.

Because, box ninja.
-
7 RepliesI like 3 but the boss battles suck until the last 3 boss fights imo.
-
6 RepliesAbsolutely can't agree with you more, I too am playing the mgs HD collection and have yet to finish 2. And so far it's starting to become one of my favorite series
-
1 ReplyActually, I just read up on Portable Ops. It actually sounds very very good. Especially story wise. I'd read a synopsis if you don't want to play it. I think I'll watch the cutscenes sometimes this week myself.
-
1 ReplySo how do you like it thus far?
-
3 RepliesI would suggest you play all of them. The Legacy Collection for PS3 has them all (even Metal Gear 1 & 2). 3, Peace Walker, and Ground Zeroes are essential to catch up on the story of Big Boss.

Looks good

2 RepliesBecause Quiet. Hngg.

12 RepliesJOIN THE CLUB. Also if you just started MGS for the first time, prepare for EXTREME FEELS as the series goes on. Especially in 3 and 4. 3 Is my favorite game of all time. ALL TIME.
-
5 RepliesMGS1 was by far my favorite in terms of storyline, MGS 2 was a bit "out there" but had an ok story. MGS 3 was an awesome prequel to the series, but you have to look past the paranormal/extra ordinary aspects of the game. I flat out loved MGS4 because it tied all the loose ends up for solid snake, but it is a movie so be prepared to sit through some long albeit kick ass cut scenes. (That Shadow Moses memory still in stills nostalgia). You may want to look into the last one released in the hd collection as well since some of the characters are in that series

8 RepliesDont waste your money on ground zeroes

6 RepliesIf I don't get Dave, Hideo doesn't get paid.... by me.

14 RepliesEdited by kgj: 8/27/2014 11:17:07 PMdon't worry, metal gear understanding just sort of comes when you play the games. no matter how hard you try, you'll just end up confused and only once you accept the true depth of your confusion will kojima present himself to you in your mind and gift you with the power to understand.
don't play all the games chronologically, do it in order of release
Like some of the other posters said, to fully enjoy MGSV:PP you'll only need to play MGS3, MGS:PW, and MGSV:GZ. There are two story arcs in the series; the Solid Snake one and the Big Boss one. The games I mentioned earlier are all from the Big Boss storyline. I would suggest just getting the HD Collection because it has both 3 and PW in it (not to mention it is multi-platform so you can play it on your console of choice) then get GZ. If you're really concerned about spoilers, be sure to play them in the order that I mentioned. They each build off the previous ones story. If not, get GZ right away and get a small taste of what TPP has to offer.

Edited by Marsawd: 8/28/2014 1:40:33 PMAlright, I haven't read any of the comments so here's an apology in advance if anyone's already ironed out everything I'm about to say. Hopefully any MGS fan that you've spoken to worth their weight in Calorie Mates has told you that MGS has an incredibly convoluted plot. Chronology's the only difficult part of it, plot-wise it's pretty easy to grasp. In terms of the story the series chronologically proceeds: MGS3: Snake Eater MGS: Portable Ops (not an entirely canon installment, take it with a pinch of salt) MGS: Peace Walker MGSV: Ground Zeroes / The Phantom Pain Metal Gear 1 Metal Gear 2 MGS1 MGS2: Sons of Liberty MGS4: Guns of the Patriots Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance If you're trying to get into the series and/or understand the story buying Collection editions of the games is a great idea seeing as they're mostly remastered now too. I can't remember what games The Legacy Collection has, I know it has MGS1 and MGS4 though so if you're gonna go for story with this franchise take a look at The Legacy Collection and The HD Collection (which has MGS2, MGS3 and Peace Walker). If you're only really interested in falling deeply in love with the new MGS that's coming out just take a look at MGS: Peace Walker and maybe MGS3 as they give perfect background for what's coming out. Hope I've been of use!

20 RepliesYup. It looks to be a GOTY contender. Just a warning for the older games, MGS2/3 have rather cumbersome controls. They're holdovers from MGS1's top-down perspective, and they don't work as well in a fixed camera/3D perspective. However, when you push through that, you'll find superbly designed games. I wish I could say the same for MGS4, though...

9 RepliesEdited by DeclinedA1: 8/28/2014 9:31:44 AMMGS Chronology MGS3 MGS Portable OPS MGS Peace Walker MGS 5 Metal Gear Metal Gear 2 MGS MGS2 MGS4 Either spend days upon days watching all the cutscenes or watch this youtube series that does a good job describing the story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=778Sr8ePnWc Metal Gear is the only video game series I would consider art. While it may be a little over the top sometimes, it has a very good story.

4 RepliesThere's a great series if lore videos if you look

Cardboard popup chicks maybe...

1 ReplyAnyone remember Metal Gear Acid for PSP? Kind of wish I had that right now.
