I reckon the hive where the first civilization to come into contact with the darkness. And rather then repel it they saw it as a god. Something to be worshipped. Over time they started to change and they saw this as ascending rather than the twisted dark magic it is. But after this they were told thay have to prove their worth. Prove to the darkness they were worthy if its magic. And they set there sites on earth....and the moon.
