So basically, you attach the motes of light to gear to raise the light stat, which in turn, raises your level past 20?

no, motes of light can be used to buy gear, and some gear has a light stat, like discipline, intellect, and strength, but you dont NEED motes of light to increase your level

You use motes to buy gear that had the light stat. If you don't have the gear equipped, you don't get the stat then don't get the levels.

Yup but I think you have to equip the gear but they never stated that.
