• Something about that line just really irks me. It really sounds like Harold is just being a whiny brat that he lost this case. What has happened to Bungie? Ever since Activision stepped in, Bungie has changed for the worse.

  • I like to imagine Marty going into the board meetings and just being a smug asshole about the whole thing. "You thought you could get rid of me? I'm still here bitches."

  • Let's imagine where Bungie would be at if it weren't for Marty's music. You know, the first video game music that actually hit the Billboard Top 100, the guy that made Halo Halo and the Xbox Xbox, single-handily with his music

  • Joking about what? Halo 2's soundtrack was indeed the first Video game soundtrack to be on the Billboard list. Halo 2's soundtrack is still the number one most sold video game soundtrack Halo is Xbox's flagship Marty made Halo Halo, so in essence Marty made Xbox Xbox.

Eh, I really wouldn't say so. Hans Zimmer is a talented composer himself, having written critically acclaimed music for multiple movies and games, including various COD titles. Did this make MW2 better than any other game? Was this what won Inception and 12 Years a Slave their own acclaims? No... but it was the cherry on top of the cake. The same applies to Martin. What about Halo CE and Halo Reach? Both of those were composed by O'Donnell... but both were fairly unmemorable games to all but the most fanatic Bungie die-hard. The soundtrack of a game is very important to the player experience, and, when well-executed, it can bring publicity and thus sales... but when it comes to ratings, it's pretty much a footnote. And to say that "Marty made Halo Halo", and somehow, on that already faulty claim, to state that "Marty made Xbox Xbox"? No. BUNGIE as one game development studio made Halo Halo, and BUNGIE as a whole made Xbox Xbox. There are so many critical aspects of a game that you're overlooking. Marty may be great at what he does for a living, but unfortunately, he's no wizard, as you claim he is.

  •
Marty made Halo Halo
No lol Nobody bought halo just for the music. He contributed but another composer could have done the soundtrack and the videogame (not the soundtrack) would still be a smash hit

  • Exactly. People's nostalgia is distorting their viewpoints. Was Marty great? Of course he was! Did some, maybe even many, buy Halo for dat soundtrack? Sure they did. But Marty also composed for Halo: Reach and Halo 3, and neither reached the same heights as the phenomenal Halo 2. A great soundtrack is a fairly big part of the equation, but it is not the end-all be-all as to what constitutes a truly good game, and what does not.

  •
No lol Nobody bought halo just for the music.
Oh yissss! Saw the game played by someone else, heard the music, got mummified to the screen, bought the game.
another composer could have done the soundtrack and the videogame (not the soundtrack) would still be a smash hit
Well we will never know. Marty works differently than other video game composers (I agre there are many fantastic composers out there) by introducing sounds and music dynamically based on the player's actions. It isn't just a melody or background music anymore. He doesn't just write the music with the story/game in mind, he gets involved in the game with developers, plays the game, until he can create the best experience for the players with his melodies.
