Hi everyone. Possibly one of the most fun parts of Destiny exploration is quickly summoning your sparrow, reveling in the endlessly-enjoyable animation of your character hopping on, and blasting off toward your desired location.
Has anyone considered that this ultra-cool feature has a downside? Think about how much longer it would take for you to get around in Destiny if you had to walk everywhere. Think about what walking-only would do for your sense of scale in the game.
Consider one of Bungie's most famous statements about the size of the world they built: "Each location on each planet is larger than all of Halo: Reach." Now, when you're blasting through that content on a sparrow, hopping off for crucial gunfights or to pick up treasure chests, and then blasting away again, it's understandable that many of you feel there's just no way Old Russia is comparable in size to Reach.
But remember you didn't have sparrows in Halo: Reach. I'm not making an argument one way or another, but do you guys think that maybe our sense of scale is altered for the worse by the sparrow?
Also really quick, you don't have unlimited sprint and movement modes in Reach.

Not at all.

well since the world is seperated into zones, I feel that's what makes it seem so small. if the zones weren't there, it wouldn't seem as small... but it's segmented so artificially that it just seems too structured for exploration.

1 ReplyWow, no one read the OP.:( Yes, I agree faster speed can make the world seem smaller. I did not play Reach (everybody dies, right?) but I think Saint Row IV is a good example. That world seemed every bit the huge world, then you get super speed and turbo glide and nothing seems far away. I really like the sparrow (as does the OP, read the post people). I think it's a great compromise between fast travel (elder scrolls, borderlands) and walking endlessly (dark arisen, dark souls). The sparrow gives the sense of a journey without tasking you with it. The flip side to the world seeming smaller is that the sparrow makes the world seem more accessible, and I definitely love it.

It is the same as fast travel in games like fall out, you lose the adventure in between. So yes the sparrow makes it feel smaller then it truly is.

Personally I don´t make that big fuzz of the size, big or small, as long as the pacing between moments of fun action is good I don´t care either way and the sparrow is a excellent way of making sure you get to said action in a nifty manor.

Edited by Tyger: 8/20/2014 9:58:12 PMNah. My favorite part of old Russia was riding through that little canyon with my sparrow. Not to mention there's multiple areas you can't use your sparrow like hell mouth for example

1 ReplyNo. The fact that it's not as big as they eluded to makes the game smaller.

6 RepliesA sparrow? Dude, even WALKING makes the game feel smaller. Open world it is not. Elder Scrolls: (Morowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim) are open world. Now perhaps I'm jumping forward a bit too far and basing everything on a beta, but as far as I can see, there's not much else to Earth to explore besides Old Russia and the Tower. In skyrim, it would take me at least 5 hrs to walk from Riften to Morthal: for anyone who's played the game, you know damn well what I'm talking about if you're the type like me who enjoys taking your time with a game

Edited by TimboSunShine: 8/19/2014 2:26:10 PMNothing was more fun than having a public event start and seeing everyone jump on their sparrows to get in on the action. It was awesome to see 3 or 4 people fly into the battle. It always felt like the cavalry arrived lol

Edited by Mandingo: 8/19/2014 8:25:59 PMAm I the only one who find the maps just fine ?
-
Walking only? I don't want this to turn into DayZ: Walking Simulator 2014
-
No, the game is actually just small
-
4 RepliesOld Russia to me is the size of a mission area. You could get across the map in 2 mins.
-
Edited by Dawnfried: 8/20/2014 10:33:21 PMOf course it makes it feel smaller, but that doesn't mean it makes the world actually feel small. The way I worded it can make seem contradicting, but I don't know how to word it better.
-
Yes the sparrow makes it feel smaller but you can't fast travel so it's not a problem. If you could fast travel then the game wouldn't be fun at all.
-
I don't think it makes the world feel smaller. I just think it gets you to the action quickly. I don't want to walk around a hallway that connects to the other side of the map. I want to get there quick to join in anything that is going on. I don't think I couldn't get from point a to point b in less than 1 min in the beta. It made my experience fun because even if I wasn't with my strike team I could reach them in no time if something happened near them.
-
No because I'm lazy and think that they should be introduced into the tower as that already takes long enough
#nofullstops
Edited by ShufflingPotato: 8/19/2014 8:44:39 AMRemember we didn't get to explore all of old russia and that's not the only map.
-
Too late now if they remove that even the fanboys will have a hard time defending that
-
1 ReplyThat may be, but goodness gracious those sparrows feel bad ass when you boost
-
5 RepliesThe sparrow made me feel like I was on Endor.
-
I prefer not to use it actually.
-
2 RepliesOf course not! Since there's no teleporting or quick travel in destiny, they make it faster to go from point a to b. How would destiny be if there were no sparrow, walking across maps and taking forever to get to the place you want
-
Yes the sparrow makes it smaller
-
No one wants to wait though. When **** happens and you're needed fast, do you really want to be on foot? I don't think so. The party will be over before you get there.

2 RepliesWhenever I compare anything to my dick it always seem small... (What I compare it too is small... Not my dick...:p)
