"You can climb that mountain over there."

Anyone remember that quote? What ever happened to that? In the beta, countless times I drove my sparrow off a ledge to an area that looked explorable, only to find that going there just killed me. It felt like all of Old Russia was the size of Forge World from Halo. I hardly considerate it to be worthy of the "Open World" title. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the beta. The only thing that disappointed me was the explore mode. I expected to be spending most of my time in the game on explore, just, you know, exploring, but the gamemodes' name isn't really true to itself when you know the whole map of Old Russia after about an hour of gameplay. The "open world" in Destiny is a bit disappointing. I doubt those small areas that are blocked off will make the area feel much bigger, either. Anyone feel the same? Edit: I made this thread right after the beta, before the game came out. Everyone got mad at me and freaked out. They all claimed, "It was just a beta." No-one really gets game betas that are available two months prior to release. Those aren't betas, they're demos. No-one believed me. Then, the game came out. And everyone began praising this thread. Funny. I believe that if Destiny wasn't overhyped/over-advertised, AngryJoe wouldn't be flipping out. It is a GREAT game, it just doesn't live up to its pre-game hype. $1,000,000 was too much of an advertising fund, Activision.

  • Who's to say that you can't go out that far in the map, all we got to play was a beta, we didn't get everything obviously. Plus most areas that had kill barriers or invisible walls were set so we can't cheat past certain areas and go around things with shortcuts. Once you get outside of the walls of Old Russia, there could be a vast wasteland for us to explore. I have faith in Bungie and I believe there is alot of extra land for us to discover.

    • You knew all of Old Russia after an hour? Did you know about the Hive/Fallen war in Skywatch after an hour? Did you know about the pikes in Forgotten Shores? Had you stood in the shadow of Kingswatch? My point is that Old Russia is pretty big and it will be bigger than the Beta, at least a little. Then there are at least three more big maps. Let spend a hundred hours or so with the final game before we're disappointed, eh?

            • Regardless of what it is, or even if it was intended to be small-area/corridor based, I think because of such a huge amount of the fan base seems to want Destiny to be open-world and support vast numbers of players simultaneously, they'll certainly be tempted to give us that in future games. Dunno if they'll fall into the temptation though. And I'm pretty damn sure this first game isn't going to fulfill that hope for those of us who want it.

It took me a really really long time to hunt down this quote that people refer to when talking about this. It was during a gamespot interview and it was said by a single employee who seemed overly excited. I wonder if that was the intent at all, as it was clear during the gameplay in the interview that it was the game equivalent of a matte painting he was talking about. That said, now that I was able to finally hunt the quote down I both don't think it matters but would like for Bungie to shut the folks complaining about it up by just saying, "Hey, sorry, that was said in error". So that we can all move on with our lives. Seriously, this seems like complaining because the game is more focused. It's not like there isn't an exploration mode that allows you to go anywhere on the map or like you can't go anywhere on the map any time you want during the story mode. I mean let it go. It's not going to change less than a month before release, bitching about it won't suddenly make it happen.

                    • At the time, I feel they had all intent to give us more space to run around in. We may have overestimated what they meant by some degree, and, perhaps more likely, they probably had to change their plans if they wanted to keep the experience fair. What I mean by the latter is that they may have cut it down so that the previous gen consoles (Xbox 360 and PS3) could support the game effectively. Personally, I am satisfied with the current exploration area size, primarily since we haven't seen all of Old Russia quite yet, based off the map. One thing that bummed me out with the open world not being so open in the beta, was the invisible roof, i see that as bad level design and by bad i don't mean it sucks or look like shit, its just one of those small things where you jump around, see a ledge and its in reach for a jump, but once you try and get there, you are pushed back down due to an invisible roof. It's the minor details like that, that bothers me in new games and you can design the level so there is a reason i can't reach the ledge, it could be distance, i might lack a foot of length and that would be reasonable, but the invisible roof just makes me feel boxed in. Besides that, i can't wait to play the game, Alpha and Beta was awesome. :)

                      • People need to remember this is basically a last gen game. It was made for old hardware, they don't have the power to make multiple open world maps skyrim sized. The next gen version maybe but def not here. Skyrim was just the map and story/side quests. Destiny is a shared world with PvP. Hopefully it has caves similar to skyrim too.

I'm not going to lie to you, I wish exploration mode was as grandiose as Skyrim. But here's the thing: Skyrim IS exploration mode. And that's all it is - only 1 game mode, and no multiplayer PvP. There's nothing "shared world" about Skyrim. So, you can't realistically expect Destiny will be near as open world as Skyrim considering everything else you're getting with Destiny. As far as Bungie not delivering on game promises...they pretty much slap "Subject to change" on everything they put out to the public.

                          • Anyone who excepted to go anywhere they could see is a little delusional. Granted, they never should have said that to begin with, but it was assumed they'd take that quote back. And this one map (out of four so far) is already bigger than forge world. Though, most portions were just driven straight through (who looked through every plane in the mothyards?). And there were at least three areas blocked off, two were straight walled off, and another was blocked by level 20 enemies (though, I got past and found it looped around to the other wise of the world, but I believe there were more branches down that way to explore).

                            • Really feel like the game coming out on 360 / ps3 also has a hand in this. the game has to work on those 8 year old consoles as well as the new ones. Alot of things probably got sliced due to not being able to work on these 4 very different platforms. still sad though cause i was thinking the same thing lol.

                            • I agree, this is what made me get into the game in the beginning. All of the people saying that this was just a Beta, are plain wrong. Yes, some parts are cut off, but that is nowhere near the scale of the game that I expected it to be. Maybe I was expecting too much, but it made me disappointed.
