"You can climb that mountain over there."

Anyone remember that quote? What ever happened to that? In the beta, countless times I drove my sparrow off a ledge to an area that looked explorable, only to find that going there just killed me. It felt like all of Old Russia was the size of Forge World from Halo. I hardly considerate it to be worthy of the "Open World" title. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the beta. The only thing that disappointed me was the explore mode. I expected to be spending most of my time in the game on explore, just, you know, exploring, but the gamemodes' name isn't really true to itself when you know the whole map of Old Russia after about an hour of gameplay. The "open world" in Destiny is a bit disappointing. I doubt those small areas that are blocked off will make the area feel much bigger, either. Anyone feel the same? Edit: I made this thread right after the beta, before the game came out. Everyone got mad at me and freaked out. They all claimed, "It was just a beta." No-one really gets game betas that are available two months prior to release. Those aren't betas, they're demos. No-one believed me. Then, the game came out. And everyone began praising this thread. Funny. I believe that if Destiny wasn't overhyped/over-advertised, AngryJoe wouldn't be flipping out. It is a GREAT game, it just doesn't live up to its pre-game hype. $1,000,000 was too much of an advertising fund, Activision.

  • U do realize that the beta was like 10% of the game right? There will be more to explore in Old Russia, don't worry.

Ok peter monalyxe or however you spell his name, the creator of fable said the same thing. Developers have big ambitions and ideas but are limited by either technology or not having money. Yes I remember plenty of developers saying see that mountain, you can climb it. No you couldn't. There will be disappointments in every game. Yes bungie said some things, yea it it a disappointment. But hey stuff happens. Maybe they'll pop a patch out that'll allow it. But right now you get what you pay for and what they created.

        • Yeah.. I said the same thing after the Alpha.. and every responded with "its the alpha mann" Now everyone is like "its the beta man" But it was very linear feeling.. your kinda funneled from one area to the next like borderlands. I don't think it'll change with the full release either..good thing there are other planets.. But thst doesn't change the fact that they straight up lied to all of us, making this game A LOT smaller than I originally thought.

          • "I played a small section of the Beta I obviously know everything about Destiny and have formed a correct opinion" That's what you sound like. This wasn't a here's a small taste of everything this game has to offer. It was to find bugs, glitches and, exploits. And yes to stress test the system. This wasn't intended to be a marketing tool or a early access or, a try before you by. Must be the first time you tested a beta or played a Bungie game.

          • You do realize it was a BETA right? They don't want you to be able to explore everything before the games released.

          • In stark contrast to all the "Beta" responses, I do agree that there were quite a few places I wanted to explore but couldn't. I really doubt that most of them will be accessible in any way on release. If they are, that's great. However, they'll probably just open up some doors and fix the levels of some of the zones. That being said, I really enjoyed exploring the world. Some areas just felt more closed than I would like. Strangely enough, I didn't really feel this way on the Moon. Pretty much anywhere on the Moon that looked cool, I was able to go. I will admit that I ramped off of some ledges into the Hellmouth just for fun, though. :)

          • I would like to see more areas used wheb the game goes live . In the beta for the explore alot of places for missions would be the same places just diffrent mobs somehow, very little substance in just that feature i guess

          • I'm totally OK with them having had to change their architecture to create the game they wanted to make.. Just release a content in a weekly update at least it something about the change and then im totally cool with it.

The problem in opinions here is that you have shooter fans who think the maps are ok because they are a pretty good size compared to most shooters but maybe they haven't played something like wow to actually know what it means to be able to go pretty much wherever you can see. And you have players who have played more pc games who honestly with the size of some maps in other games were not unreasonable to expect bigger open world especially when bungie pointed at a mountain we can't get to and said we could get to it. If you think that was an unreasonable expectation then you should go play wow. That is the open world people were expecting when bungie talked about the open world and the mountains. It wasn't overhype or expectations it was a clear thing bungie said and it's on video and from what we know now it probably isn't true. People have a right to be upset especially since they spent money to pre order a game that may be significantly different than what they were told it was.

                  • It is still possible it all closed off for the beta and we will be able to explore much more in the full version.

                  • I made this argument on a different thread and was labeled a troll that I didnt understand the meaning behind open world/sandbox concept. i am glad there are others out there who agree with me. What they gave us was not in no way shape or form open world.

                    • It's a larger map than most games but I agree, Destiny doesn't deserve the title Open World if we can't fly off a cliff. A map half the size if Skyrim is considered Open World.

                    • I agree, the whole "if you see it you can go there" thing is one of the reasons I was really excited for Destiny. I was kind of disappointed when I finally played it.

                      • Well I think the philosophy of the smaller open world is that if you're having a hard time fighting a public event mini boss or something of that sort, you can just call up your friend and say "hey, I'm having trouble fighting a high level hallowed knight, can you meet me in the rocket yard and lend a hand" and your buddy can be there in minutes on his sparrow. Also, speaking of sparrows, they're extremely fast and make the map seem smaller than it is since you can travel so quickly, but if you try going cross it by foot it acually takes a while to get from one side of the map to the other. But I get what you're saying, I was really hoping to a skyrim kind of open world myself, but I'm satisfied with destiny's smaller explorable area. For one thing it's very very detailed, with lost golden age stories littered all ver the place, and I still put in 20 + hours into exploring and re-exploring old Russia in the beta, and I found it more fun and exciting each time, even if it was the same places I was going back to again and again.

                      • It's not truly open world, that's for sure. I was hoping for multiple areas the size of the Skyrim map.
