"You can climb that mountain over there."

Anyone remember that quote? What ever happened to that? In the beta, countless times I drove my sparrow off a ledge to an area that looked explorable, only to find that going there just killed me. It felt like all of Old Russia was the size of Forge World from Halo. I hardly considerate it to be worthy of the "Open World" title. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the beta. The only thing that disappointed me was the explore mode. I expected to be spending most of my time in the game on explore, just, you know, exploring, but the gamemodes' name isn't really true to itself when you know the whole map of Old Russia after about an hour of gameplay. The "open world" in Destiny is a bit disappointing. I doubt those small areas that are blocked off will make the area feel much bigger, either. Anyone feel the same? Edit: I made this thread right after the beta, before the game came out. Everyone got mad at me and freaked out. They all claimed, "It was just a beta." No-one really gets game betas that are available two months prior to release. Those aren't betas, they're demos. No-one believed me. Then, the game came out. And everyone began praising this thread. Funny. I believe that if Destiny wasn't overhyped/over-advertised, AngryJoe wouldn't be flipping out. It is a GREAT game, it just doesn't live up to its pre-game hype. $1,000,000 was too much of an advertising fund, Activision.

I find it amazing how linear most people think about this. So some dev or other Bungie employee said something like that many months ago, so what? Project targets and requirements are always subjected to change, it is the way of software development, things may seem possible at one point and might be impossible or unwanted at another point. Priorities shift under budget and time constraints as well as hardware constraints.

  • That wasn't all of Old Russia. Please refrain from hyperbole if you expect to be taken as providing constructive criticism as opposed to simply being another in the monotonously long and tediously marching column of whiny -blam!-tards.

  • Take a game like Just Cause 2 for example, even over GTA. Just Cause 2 really does not get enough credit. The story sucks, the AI sucks, but the world is absolutely amazing. You can see the tiniest things far off in the distance, like mountains. Then you can get in a plane, car, or boat (you may wind up needing all three) and spend the next 15 minutes going out there, and you can explore those mountains, and everything in between. There is usually NOTHING to do on those mountains but hunt for Easter eggs and the like, but it was priceless for me to be able to go out there and run around. Maybe it's just a certain type of person. I drive through Virginia, Colorado, California and I look out at the mountains and beautiful landscapes and I'm overwhelmed with a sense of "Damn I wish I could just get out of my car and explore that shit, play on it, conquer it!" but if I did, I'd probably get tired, and hurt, and bored, and I wouldn't be able to find a car/plane/sparrow and launch it off the mountain when I want to go home. Open world games give me that power in a way that real life can't, and I for one absolutely love it. It makes a game so much more valuable to me.

    • Lol, I am with you man. I have been laughing about that old interview for a long time. Though I have to say I loved the Beta as well and am super excited for the full release but that "open world" aspect they talked about long ago never came to fruition. I will say that no loading when in a certain map or area (eg Old Russia) is pretty great. I think to create a truly open world game in a title set in space seems might be tough goal to achieve.

      • Why do you hear what you want to instead of what is exactly being said? That quote is completely out of context. That same demo was presented several times and each time the word "could" was emphasized as opposed to would. The entire point of that quote was to point out that all the terrain exists in-engine as opposed to a "sky box". Ever since Halo CE Bungie creates massive amounts of terrain beyond the play space to enhance the experience of being in another world - Halo 2 had crazy areas you could get to via grenade jumps with some Easter eggs. The point was to showcase the graphics engine, not comment on the size of the game... Bungie didn't lie - you just didn't understand...

No but seriously everyone is judging "play space" by beta, we have no idea if those walls were imposed by beta or final product so these posts just seem dumb to me until we know

                • They said that those ares were playable ground, and that someday/sometime bungie will be able to build on that terrain. Not exact those words, but kinda. They never really said that we could go there now, but they more hinted at sometime/someday they can open it up to us. Atleast that was my understanding of it.,

                  • What made me sink $500 on the PS4 bundle wasn't a seemingly endless map to explore - I've done that before. Alone. Raids. Something different. Something that requires communication, and offers an experience other shooters in the genre cannot. This is what I hope Bungie can deliver on. The large, Skyrim-sized open world would have been great, but I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of map space to be able to enjoy shared experiences with my friends.

                    • If anyone actually listened to the video, it's clearly stated that it's all playable space that they hope to take you to one day. I don't recall then ever stating it was all available on day one. I don't get why everyone is so pissed anyways, thinking you could go anywhere in the world is so unrealistic you have to be dumb to make yourself believe it. "All of this is playable space that we hope to get to send you to one day. It is all real geometry, we can go there now if we wanted to." -Behind Closed Doors E3 No where does it say that we can go there on day one. He states they hope to send us there and that he could go there.

I'll hold any responses to the "open world" debate until I own the actual copy of the game. There were doors that were locked, areas guarded by multiple high level enemies, and some that said "turn around or get blasted! 10...9..." I'm not saying "there will be so much more we haven't seen yet on Earth or the Moon I KNOW IT" or anything of that sense. I'm merely not going to start a ragefest between fanboys and everyone else when the final product hasn't been shipped yet. Usually the beginning area in games is the smallest to get the gamer accustomed to mechanics and gameplay. This is merely an observation/my opinion so don't take it for fact. Let's all wait until Sept 9th when the real flame wars begin.

                      • The playable area in the beta was pretty big. There were other areas that me and my friends visitid but couldn't do anything due to being [???]. So you add those "missions" or just enemies to the beta stuff and its pretty big. Now thats just earth, there is moon, reef, mars, venus and maybe more, plus the raids and add the vaulted glass. Thats a ton by my standards.

                      • Ok, so... I want to see a show of hands. How many of you have played the full release version of Destiny to be able to accurately compare the finished games map sizes to what was represented in the Beta? Just a quick show of hands. ... ? I thought so. Aside from rampant and uncontrolled fear, mixed with a healthy dose of "facts-by-anal-extraction"; you have nothing of gravitas to speak of.

I don't understand how everyone can judge Destiny after playing the beta, we only scratched the surface. They've done a hell of a job keeping info under lock and key, and with today's internet.. that's effin impressive. Well see what destiny is really about in a few weeks. Let bungie do what they do best, makes games we all love. I swear it's nothing but a constant hate fest on this forum. Why don't we start some topics praising destiny? PS: Deej, can you open up a "haters" sub forum for these clowns?

                          • I'm not going to lie. I was expecting a dense openworld. With alot to do. But that was when I played as a lone wolf. Now with the group/clan I'm in and the friends I made I feel that the size isn't a problem. There is alot to do. And with the expansions coming out I feel that I will have alot to do in the full game and that I will not be bored by the content. This game will succeed because the gameplay beats the size.

it sounds like you, and a lot of people, do not like the "it's just a beta" line so how about "you haven't experienced the full version" as a line. It's fair to say "i don't think it will the game will be as big as promised", in a very pessimistic way, but at least you don't sound like a child while saying it. Why do people think that what is essentially a demo would show them exactly how much content is in a game. When i played the dark souls 2 network test two areas were shown, then the full release had over ten times as much content. If Destiny releases and it turns out that they miss represented their product then fine what everyone said about it is right, but don't then turn around and say i told you guys, because that''s crap and happenstance. No one has given anything solid to back up their arguments, if you wanna talk crap and slander a company then give us something to give credence to your arguments. Even if its just a comparison to previous bungie betas compared to the full release of the games i'll be happy. I'm not taking a shit on the OP either, i even felt similar disappointments running off areas, but there is a response calling bungie liars, and that's a completely garbage thing to do without anything to back you up.

                                • That video is over a year old. I wouldn't really take that as being truth anymore. Things can change over the course of a year, same with how the weapon skill trees have changed a lot. Now it might be possible to go back to that area in the full game as it was blocked off in beta. Or they might not have had the resources to make it the way they originally intended. It doesn't really matter though because the playable space is not just on one planet. We start off on Earth, but then go to the moon. Even during the beta there was a lot to explore around there and I expect it to open up some more in the full game. After that we have Venus and Mars to go wander around and fight on, and then there's the Reef which we don't know too much about yet. This game will have plenty of areas to go around and explore it's just that it's been split up between worlds. I wouldn't want a skyrim sized area on each world we played on. It would just be too big in my opinion.
