"You can climb that mountain over there."

Anyone remember that quote? What ever happened to that? In the beta, countless times I drove my sparrow off a ledge to an area that looked explorable, only to find that going there just killed me. It felt like all of Old Russia was the size of Forge World from Halo. I hardly considerate it to be worthy of the "Open World" title. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the beta. The only thing that disappointed me was the explore mode. I expected to be spending most of my time in the game on explore, just, you know, exploring, but the gamemodes' name isn't really true to itself when you know the whole map of Old Russia after about an hour of gameplay. The "open world" in Destiny is a bit disappointing. I doubt those small areas that are blocked off will make the area feel much bigger, either. Anyone feel the same? Edit: I made this thread right after the beta, before the game came out. Everyone got mad at me and freaked out. They all claimed, "It was just a beta." No-one really gets game betas that are available two months prior to release. Those aren't betas, they're demos. No-one believed me. Then, the game came out. And everyone began praising this thread. Funny. I believe that if Destiny wasn't overhyped/over-advertised, AngryJoe wouldn't be flipping out. It is a GREAT game, it just doesn't live up to its pre-game hype. $1,000,000 was too much of an advertising fund, Activision.

  • Sadly I do remember that quote clearly. Sadly, although I still have extreme hype for the game, my hype has diminished some after seeing the extent of the "explore" mode. I'm not disappointed at the seemingly small size of Old Russia. In fact that was what I had expected it to be like for a long time. But then they played the demo and said "you can climb that mountain over there," and I started doing backflips and cheering. But then there came the Beta. . . . It's not the fact it that wasn't as big as I thought it was going to be. It's the fact that they practically lied to us, raised my expectations and excitement, and then brought them both crashing down in one stroke.

      •
Anyone remember that quote?
Yep, I remember. It was first uttered by Todd Howard, Game Director for Bethesda Game Studios when they were talking about the latest (at the time) installment of The Elder Scrolls series; Skyrim. And just like in all of the other TES games before, he didn't lie. If you saw something in game, you could go there. Bungie wants to make an open-world RPG type of title? Study how Bethesda builds their world. Some people may not enjoy everything Bethesda does with the Elder Scrolls/Fallout, but they do know how to craft an actual Open-World experience and world.

          • Perhaps that you can but you have to make a massive circle to get there? Like going through most of the map to reach it.

            • I had the same sentiment after the beta. I'm just really hoping this is due to the fact that it's the first area in the game and they wanted to keep it simple for beginners. I had a chance to play the moon for a bit and, while the surface area of the map seemed pretty comparable to Old Russia, the tunnel systems were surprising vast and complex.

              • I believe what he meant was that it was not a skybox and that they took the time to actually make that mountain and everything you can see and that's why it looks so damn good. Also who cares if you can't go there if there is nothing to do over there except explore then what is the point?

                  • You do understand that a console is a computer, right? A computer you buy for a few hundred bucks? Yes? What the hell makes you think a game would suddenly be fifty times bigger? Think, man!

                    • For me, it was the invisible walls in areas you would think would be able to be traversed. I wanted to take a shortcut to the ocean (I forgot the name) by climbing along the mountain walls.

                      • I thought that was hilarious when you said you tried to drive off into somewhere and died, I too had thought about it, but stopped at the edge of the cliff and decided otherwise due to the great height of the fall, and also, there's a lot more of the map than most players realize, a lot of hiden places and pathways, but they're useless during the beta because they're fulled with level 20 enemies, so getting past there without getting one hit killed is challenging enough

                          • Alot of those areas were down cliffs. Guardians and sparrows take fall damage. Also did you really thing they'd show the whole map in the beta?
