I don't know why I'm posting about this. Maybe I just need to get some stuff off my chest. You don't have to read this if you don't want to, but I felt like I had to write something about this.
His name was Jack. He was our pet bird for 4 years. I woke up this morning, and found it a bit odd that he wasn't making noise like usual. I went upstairs to give him food and water, and he seemed to be all fine and well. Tonight, I was out of the house when I got the text from my cousin, living at my house, that Jack had died. At that moment, I was stunned. I don't understand how he could have died, it feels like we lost him too soon. Like I said, I don't know why I'm posting about this. I feel responsible for his death: I should have been paying closer attention. I should have done so much more than what I was doing to look after him while my mother was gone. I feel like a worthless, careless, selfish piece of shit right now.
Maybe telling a story about him will help. He was the greatest escape artist I had ever seen, giving Houdini a run for his money. No matter what type of cage we would put him in, he would always find a way to undo the lock from the inside and push himself out on the door. I still have no idea to this day how he managed to pull off the last cage, but every time I would come home from school (this was last year, before I went to college), I would find him sitting on top of his cage with one of the doors open. We were all baffled by the sneaky bastard. He also always had to be in the middle of what was going on all the time. Every time he heard company talking downstairs, he would start screeching and squawking until we brought him down, at which he would happily nuzzle in the newcomer's hair (he preferred females with long, voluminous hair that he could wrap himself up in like a silk curtain. What a ladies man.)
I'm going to miss him so much. We're all going to miss him. Jack, I love you so much, and I'm sorry for not keeping a closer eye when I noticed you weren't making any noise as usual.
Farewell, my lovably obnoxious feathered friend. I'll see you again some day.
EDIT: I have a video I took of him a long time ago escaping. Yes, this is Jack in the video. He's escaping from the first bird cage we got him.

RIP birdy. I had a tortoise quite a few years ago as my first ever personal pet. Unfortunately I was an ass who routinely forgot to feed him, water his bowl, and pick up his poop; some days he would literally live in his own shit. Don't worry, I sold him to a responsible family who wanted a tortoise after a few months. Hopefully this makes you feel better knowing you are leagues better an owner than I was.

2 RepliesWhen humans die it's ok for some reason. Unless you were close to them. When a pet dies the whole world cries.

3 RepliesI'm sorry Malv. Don't blame yourself though You gave him a good home and a loving family. There's nothing you should feel bad or responsible for. You took care of him as any owner should

1 ReplyEdited by Lance: 8/11/2014 7:29:13 AMI have a similar feeling about a parakeet I had a while back named Sky. I was over at a friends house when my brother called me and very bluntly gave me the news. It was most likely my fault, I was fairly young at the time and I've come to attribute it to not being ready for the responsibility that comes with taking care of a pet. I've moved on since though, I have new pets now, and I've had worse experiences with pets than what happened with Sky. Just recently I've noticed how old my dog is getting, her legs aren't what they used to be and she can barely jump up onto my bed anymore. Not looking forward to saying goodbye to her, but at least I'm expecting it. Sky went so suddenly, like with your bird, he seemed to be completely fine. And when I first got my current dog, her passing away never even crossed my mind, she just seemed very permanent, invincible in some childish sort of way. These days, I know she won't be around forever, but all I can really do is steel myself for when she goes, making the most of the time before she does.
Typing that almost made me cry.
