What is the difference between Strikes and Raids?

The one thing that has really puzzled me was when I heard about raids. At first, I thought this would be a PVP gamemode. When watching one of the developers talk about it, all it really seemed like was just a Strike that was harder in everything. So what I'm asking is, why are strikes and raids ultimately apart from each other? Wouldn't a raid just be a strike? Both of the words are synonymous to each other. What made them decide to advertise them as two different things? Any insight or comments from players and/or developers is fine by me.

Main difference between a Strike and a Raid is the level of communication required and length. The Strike in the beta lasted around 30 mins with randoms and be completed easily with no communication at all. The Raid is supposedly long enough to warrant a check point system and the level of communication required is supposedly high enough to warrant no Match making. If I were to categorize them, a strike could be considered a dungeon and the raid as a gauntlet.
