When I was 12 I used to love Anime and it used to make me cry and stuff because some of them were so sad (Elfen Lied, Ayakashi) but after that I started realizing something. The plot of them are amazing and are well developed, but the dialogue is god awful. I was surprised by this realization because Japanese video games like mgs and dot. Hack are really well written and have a good balance of everything (cheesiness, seriousness, sad moments.) God bless Kojima. But Anime. Holy crap, why is it so cheesy and melodramatic 80% of the time. A strong example is on Attack on Titan when they asked the protagonist if he was a titan or human, I lost it right there. It was so bad. Can anyone relate?

Why is Anime so poorly written?
It isn't. Just like any other genre of movie, tv, book, etc, there's some shitty stuff and there's some fantastic stuff. Don't be that guy and lump it all together just because you don't like it.

1 ReplyI disagree 100%. Anime is completely normal.
-
6 RepliesBecause the target audience is lonely teenagers who are sexually attracted to the unrealistically proportioned female characters because they can't find a woman in real life.

3 RepliesI have a few friends who watch anime in japanese. They swear up and down that the dialogue becomes awful through translation, and its better in japanese. Im not sure I believe them

2 RepliesWhy is your face so poorly drawn?
I pride myself in contributing nothing in this thread.
11 RepliesWe can't say MGS had flawless writing, because^ Also, have you seen the English dubbed version of Fullmetal alchemist: Brotherhood?

Dialogue in anime is usually really awkward to me. I think that's just how the Japanese are.

2 RepliesThen you get jewels such as Tokyo Ghoul, Hellsing, among others it's just a matter of weeding it out. Imagine a gent trying to buy an American Rock album in Canada. Rock is so diverse that for the most part the really popular bits are viewed by the more mature community as total shit. However Rock itself is also very diverse, so sooner or later something will pop-up for all tastes and preferences. Ofcourse... Part of the reason it's shit is because we're talking Anime instead of Manga... Tokyo Ghoul, Ao no Exorcist. I cannot imagine why people would choose the Anime of these especially.

1 ReplyUmmmm it's a cartoon

2 RepliesThere's just some things Japs aren't good at. Storytelling is on the list, right next to vengeance and porn.

1 ReplyBecause Japan. Also, translations are difficult.

1 ReplyBecause it's made for children.

1 ReplyWell some of the "badness" you've been feeling could be chalked up to any number of things. You've got to remember how these anime have to come all the way from Japan and get dubbed in America, so there could very well be some loss of good writing in that.

Japanese conversational structure I guess.

Moe and otaku culture killed anime. Sometimes I think Japan has a 12 year old mindset.

Have you looked at its fan base recently?

Try Urotsukidoji. Very classy...

3 RepliesEdited by NaLo: 8/3/2014 2:57:39 PMWatch Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's got some really well made characters (although the main character is a whiny bitch but he has his reasons I guess). It's a shame they ran out of money and time near the end of the show but they made it up for the last two episodes with the End of Evangelion movie.

Most people listen to the original Japanese versions for that exact reason.
-
Because its trash. All of it.
-
It's another language is the reason. What seems weirdly phrased to us is quite ordinary for them, and perfect translations are hard to get. To this day Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is still my favorite all time anime thanks to its excellent dub transition.
