Hopefully in the story, or sidequest, or a dlc I don't care which we get to find out who built the exo. Maybe a counter force anpgainst the Vex? A weaponized ghost companion? Souls of those returned from the void?

You didnt know!!!!In the golden age you had rhey change to find a Exo in every cracker jack box it was nice suprise

You unlock the info in a dead ghost, Humans built them.
-
The Exo's where built during the golden age in Humanities image, and designed for war (Subtle philosophical hint there, Bungie).
Who built the Exos?
Cylons...

The Cylons were created by man. They were created to make life easier on the Twelve Colonies. ...and then the day came when the Cylons decided to kill their masters.

Humans built them

Exos were built by the Humans during the Golden Age. For what purpose, we don't quite know, though they are described as tireless war machines. Hopefully we get more information on their background. I'm writing a story about the end of the Golden Age that puts in my own thought and ideas. I'll post it here in #Destiny when it's done.
-
My own personal theory they where once humans who gave up their fleshy useless bodies for the greatness that is the machine! Of course they F'ed up the process and lost their memoires. Or they lost a war and the memoires where wiped.
Built for a long-forgotten struggle, Exos are self-aware war machines so advanced that nothing short of a Ghost can understand their inner functions. They remain ciphers, even to themselves: their origins and purpose lost to time. Whoever built the Exos fashioned them in humanity's image, gifting them with diversity of mind and body. Many of the City's Exo citizens live and work alongside their organic brethren. But others fight again, re-forged in the Light of the Traveler to serve as Guardians.
I'm pretty sure it was said that humans built the exos during the golden age.
-
According to what I have gleened from the lore, Exos were created by Humans to do multiple different tasks, one of which was to combat something but I'm not sure what, which scares me... What could have been so powerful that humans had to create the Exos to fight?
-
From what I recall in the grimoire, an earlier commenter is correct, exos were crafted by humans in a last ditch effort to protect themselves from the darkness. But clearly that didn't go too well.
-
It's skynet all over again. Damn terminators
-
Edited by ColdAtrophy: 7/29/2014 5:41:08 AMThey were created to help man, by man, according to the Grimoire cards. EDIT: I stand corrected. I guess I remembered wrong. I just checked the Grimoire and this is what it says, copy + pasted: Built for a long-forgotten struggle, Exos are self-aware war machines so advanced that nothing short of a Ghost can understand their inner functions. They remain ciphers, even to themselves: their origins and purpose lost to time. Whoever built the Exos fashioned them in humanity's image, gifting them with diversity of mind and body. God, on the 8th day...

Edited by Rogisgodlike: 7/29/2014 5:28:33 AMMan I made them as my personal servants. When the darkness came, and the world saw their combat skills they went into mass production. Yeah they stole the designs from me. I kinda got blown away and my main servant exo Rexus Prime uploaded my consciousness into the most awesome exo frame. So, now I'm my own creation. Don't hate you wish you were as cool as me.

I think the light built them
-
Edited by KierroYuy: 7/29/2014 5:05:24 AMMy friend asked about this. Now it's a long shot of a guess. I told my friend, that people on the forums call EXOs Terminators... now maybe cliche, but what if that's not too far from the truth? Say, the Fallen, made the EXOs. VI infiltration units, created to assassinate high ranking humans during the war. And "protect" their creators, maybe as said the Fallen? However, they became full blown AIs, fully self-aware, because of the Traveler. It gave them "Free will", to decide if killing humans (Awoken) was really the right thing. Just my thought.

Edited by Longestfellow: 7/29/2014 5:02:12 AMActually Pluto got mad we stopped calling it a planet, developes the "exo's"(which is an ancient sumerian word for darkness if i recall my days at the academy) to destroy us all and the traveller came and saved the day as a giant magnet, erasing the exo's nefarious plan. check and mate.
-
Well I hope we get to go into an exo plant or something. Did any of u play the game dragon age origins. there was a dlc were u got an extra tag along in ur journeys and u get to se were the golem came from I think this could be like a bases from which we have a great adventure into the past.

Edited by Longestfellow: 7/29/2014 4:43:05 AMIm pretty sure in some dialogue it said we(humans) built them. edit from the wiki:
Exo began as self-aware war machines developed by humanity during the Golden Age[2] for a long forgotten war,[1] with the sole purpose of protecting their creators.[3] They were rebooted during the collapse and now have no memory of their original function.
