Why we need trading and how to implement it without ruining the game

First and foremost, I love this game. I've been playing basically non-stop outside of work and have maxed out all three classes so props to Bungie. That being said, one of the things, among many, that are missing from a social aspect is trading. I've been playing FPS's since Doom (1993) and have been into MMORPGs since WoW: The Burning crusade and I can tell you that this game REALLY needs to implement some sort of trading. Here why: #1: Because nothing feels better than being able to give away the gear you can't use to your friends. How many times have you been playing with your friends so far and you get something that isn't as good as what you're using but your friend can use only to be able to dismantle it for a minute amount of glimmer? Wouldn't it be nice to just be able to give it to you friends so they can use it on their character or one of their alts? In most MMOs there is an economy and you're able to sell that item somewhere and to someone but in Destiny you can't, so basically any really good drops are essentially useless to you, short of dismantling it, but could be considered an early Christmas to your buddy. #2: Because grinding sucks I'm not sure how many of you have noticed but all of the Legendary/Exotic level 20 items have a ton of possible upgrades and a lot of them require more than just glimmer. Weapon parts, spinemetal, spahire wire, helium filaments and so on. A lot of times you wont have these items handy and you'll have to go grind PVE until you can find enough. Wouldn't it be nice if you can just barter for these items? I have 20 spinemetal leaves and you have 20 saphire wires. Problem solved. Who knows all the things you'll need to have to do everything later in this game but I can promise it can't just be done with glimmer. #3: Because having the ability, and reason to potentially interact with anyone and everyone is what makes a true MMO. Right now this game is seriously lacking in the MMO/Social elements. No chat, limited voice, no trading, etc... The Tower is supposed to be "a social hub" as Bungie describes it but really all it is right now is a place to go to get your engrams decoded, pick up bounties and dance with 16 other people. Enabling trading, along with other things, would make this a TRUE social hub and not just a place with a bunch of forgetful faces running around. So how can trading be implemented without breaking the game? There are many good cases against having trading but all of them can be addressed with a little creativity and brainpower. Problem: "Enabling trading will break the game like Diablo and Borderlands where people (chinese) farm glimmer and items and duplicates and blah blah..." Solution: - No auction houses No explanation needed -No exchange of glimmer This will make farm factories basically irrelevant. Only items can be traded for items, or given away in person. -Legendary and Exotic Items are automatically bound to account regardless of how they are acquired (exceptions to this rule below) Again, this will making item farming and item selling in the real world (eBay, MMO account sales websites) impossible -No mail - All trading must be done in person This is a big one and mainly for Bungie's sake. This will deter strangers, your brother, your pissed off roommate from accessing your account and sending all of your valueble items to other accounts which creates a customer service nightmare for Bungie. (this happens in WoW all the time) I think that should handle most of the abuse or game breaking arguments. Feel free to bring up more if you guys have any. Some features that I think would be cool along the lines of trading. After Strike Trading It would be cool to be able to trade items with your fireteam immediately after a strike. (legendary and exotic items included) Once the strike end it brings up a scoreboard and shows all of the weapons/armor each person picked up and lets you 'Request' or 'Trade' for that item right then and there. At which point your friend or stranger can simply give the item to you or you can choose to trade for it from something they got in the Strike. Additionally, all the items you pick up from a strike can permanently be traded with your strike members. So for example: my friend and I run a strike and I pick up a legendary Helmet that isn't as good as mine but he doesnt need it right that moment, or whatever. Well that Helmet permanently lists the two people that I can still trade that helmet with down the line if I want to. Make sense? This would also apply to engrams and the items that are decoded from them. In person trading So I need some weapons parts and I say that in chat (which hopefully will be added) so a person comes and finds me who has tons of parts. But what do they need? Instead of them asking if I have a dozen different items, it'd be awesome if you could grant them access to view whats in your inventory so they can just sort through and be like "Oh, I need some sapphire wire. I'll trade you for those" At which point you initiate a trade for the agreed upon transaction. Cool? Up the player count in The Tower For this to work there has to be way more people on a tower server. Plain and simple. If Battlefield 4 can handle 24 players on a server I don't see why Bungie can't implement that many, plus more since were all just standing around. So that's my 2 cents. Bungie has created a great game here but I think it can be so much better with a few more social features added. What do you guys think?

  • My god..the ignorance on this thread! It's.... Actually, pretty typical for Bnet... Anywho, I was pretty anti-trading, but I feel the OPs safeguards are sufficient. I support this. And ROFL @ "urn et dun beh layseh" people. Say I run Devil's Lair 10 times and don't get Shingen-C, but I get the Conzo or whatever that Sniper was called. Say my friend runs it 10 times aswell, doesn't get a single Sniper, but gets two Shingens. Please, tell me all about how wanting a trading system is lazy.

  • Maybe allow you to trade for things only of the same value. Uncommon for an uncommon. Legendary for a legendary.

  • Destiny isn't grindy in the first place. There is no need to cater even more to the casuals because they can't tolerate a bit of work to earn something.

    • that's lazy farming for gear takes time and effort and if I get something good I'm keeping it. what if I start another character that needs weapons? that's what the vault is for. if people are to lazy to farm fr their own stuff then oh well

    • people dont understand that some trading is needed. Im tired of hearing the "earn it yourself" excuse. What if "earning" it isnt working. What if you and a couple of your friends do a strike/raid many times and they get a weapon you want everytime. Now they have 5 of that weapon, and you have none, but since you cant trade you have to continue to grind while your friends just scrap the extras they have

      • #1: Because nothing feels better than being able to give away the gear you can't use to your friends. ---Except helping your friends earn their own stuff while giving you a chance at more stuff of the same quality. #2: Because grinding sucks ---Being too lazy to go get your own gear sucks. If its fun, because you make it fun, it wont suck. You are the only consistent factor when it comes to your experience. #3: Because having the ability, and reason to potentially interact with anyone and everyone is what makes a true MMO. ---Destiny is not an MMO. Or an RPG. Or the typical shooter. Your label causes your dysfunction. The same thought process that leads you to think that it is anything but its own game, is this: My dog is not a duck, he cant fly, change him. My Destiny is a sub par MMO/RPG/FPS because it doesnt have trading/branching story/the same physics engine and gameplay as COD/BF4/HALO/etc..., add those things so it can be the MMO/RPG/FPS I think it is. Its not an MMO, not an RPG, not the typical FPS. It is Destiny. Simple concept, nothing hard about the concept unless a person chooses to make it hard. You would make a good case if it was an MMO. But its not. You havent seen the full game and already want expansive changes. Could be that this games not for you, since what Bungie made isnt good enough. Could be that you have a busy life and wont have time to go get all the cool loot and want an easy way that wont interfere. Understandable, but you should understand the concepts: 1. go earn what you want. 2. if you can make something better go do it. good luck. 3. No, trading is not needed or wanted by anyone with the gumption to go earn what they have, to tell the story of it to their friend that doesnt have it, and then go do it again with that friend, generating many moments of camaraderie and joy. 4. or you could trade with some schmuck in the tower and be like, "yeah, i got it off a guy in the tower just now, i traded some wire for it, he was uh, a titan..."

        • You don't need to play this game. If you want a trading system go to WoW and play around with the Auction House all day.

        • Even that system can be taken advantage of. There are plenty of ways to improve the game socially, but trading has the potential to hurt the game in other ways. Trading isn't necessary for this MMO either way. I like being able to earn my stuff and merits, and there's a certain amount respect that comes from taking the time to do it.

        • I may be in the minority here but I like that every accomplishment be it luck or grinding is yours and yours alone. Meaning if you farm for the perfect weapon you did that and no one else handed it to you.

                  • For items up to uncommon, this is mandatory. I donr understand wha everybody is hating about trade. When legendary trades between strangers is not possible, there should be no problems. And it is just dumb to end a strike with others, just to see a gear you carve for dropped for another player who is going to disassemble it anyways. This makes very awkward comical context situations. I would be surprised when no webcomic takes a shot in this topic. Penny arcade, im looking at you.

                      • There should be a trading system. If you get an exotic item or weapon you will never use, I don't see the harm it would do to give it to a friend. As long as there is no duping glitch, trading would be great.
