No, you didn't have to do the moon.
You just had to do something, mission (Story, explore, strike) wander around the tower interacting with people, or do the crucible (or the iron banner thing) during the time. Not necessarily be on the moon.
They just opened the moon to try to entice a lot of people on at a certain time.
