Ok so with the up coming release of Destiny on September 9th I was wondering what would be a great PS4 headset to have. I am just looking for a PS4 headset. Now before anyone answer please read the entire thread before answering. I have heard great things about Astro but at the same time with Turtle Beach. Now now fanboys hold on before you give an opinion. It will pretty much come down to Dolby Digital VS DTS more so the Astro A 50 (Dolby Digital) vs the new not yet released Turtle Beach Elite 800 (DTS). I understand that it really comes down to personal preference. From everything that I have read, DTS takes the cake on audio in the music and theatrical scene if its available but there are more Dolby Digital friendly things out now. I have also read that the majority of competitive gamers use Astros. Unfortunately Best Buy only does audio tests for music and not gaming. Also if you leave a comment please explain why you made that choice so I can get a better understanding. I am only asking about these TWO headsets not any others. Please don't mention others because it'll be pointless and you'll be speaking to deaf ears.

I've used TB's for ever... never used another headset until last night when my second pair in two months snapped because there made of very fragile plastic. I take care of my stuff because I value money and what this stuff costs. The plastic that slides in and out of the headset is very poor quality. Picked up some A50's and am very impressed with the build quality and sound. I'm no fan boy just someone who has an unbiased opinion about what I experienced.

3 RepliesI bought the A50 in December and the microphone just died on me this week end in the middle of raid.. i have yet to hear from Astro Support after more than 48H. In the mean time i ordered an Elite 800 as a backup headset (or primary if i found that it is better). very disappointed that after 5 month the mic simply stopped working because of internal cabling issue.. (after i muted/unmuted it).

ASTRO probably, I myself have sennheiser HD 558's and love them
-
I have astro a40s
-
I have A40's > A50's Nothing more annoying then having to charge a headset 4 hours into a strike.

1 ReplyHave A50 and love them. Destiny was great with them.

5 Repliesastros are being updated for next gen in october/november. but steelseries H wireless is way better than either

My advice is to be careful and audition them if you can. It is a very subjective and individual choice. I have tried every wireless Turtle Beaches out there and none of them come close to the sonic performance of the A50's IMHO - that is paramount in my decision making; bells and whistles are secondary. I really want to hear from a reviewer that understands this and reviews the Elite 800's; comparing them to the A50's would be a bonus. I love the features of the Turtle Beaches but hate the audio performance. The 800's do sound interesting but I'll believe it when I see (hear) it. This is not necessarily a criticism but be aware that the Elite 800 is pseudo DTS in that you must set your PS4 to Dolby Digital output or they won't work! ie the DTS processing is overlayed on the Dolby Digital bitstream. This still may be a good thing and the DTS processing a benefit - it's just a bit misleading dont you think?

I hated both pairs of Beaches I got and they broke within months. Since switching to Astros (A40) I've had no problems for 4 years. Out of the two in your poll, I say Astros all day

3 RepliesSteelseries H Wireless, that's what I'm looking at. Was looking at Gen2 Astros and the 800p. But H seem to be best.

1 ReplyEdited by MizzrBear69: 11/13/2014 3:13:16 PMHere's a mini review on the TB Elite 800's and Astro A50's: (I am working on a video review) This is from hands-on experience. The Turtle Beach Elite 800's: The good: - They look really nice, nice finish. - Battery life is really good, about 8h - Fancy Packaging - Microphone seems to be really good - Tons of features and potential... The bad: - Sound quality is good, not amazing, just good... for 300 bucks you'd expect AMAZING sound quality. Every preset feels just boomy and unnecessarily bass heavy. - Positional audio is ... meh... can barely tell the difference. - They are advertised as DTS... but as some people mentioned here the input has to be Dolby (Even though after the recent PS4 Update, they work if you select DTS! - though I can't really tell any difference). - They feel heavy (almost 300g) - Range on them is awful, being 15ft away will drop the connection. - They do look good, but feel a bit flimsy... Questioning durability here - No custom equalizer, only presets The ugly.... (I've had MASSIVE problems with this headset...) - Audio is choppy, and connection will drop for a couple of seconds. This happens several times an hour. This is extremely annoying! - I have to re-pair it with the transmitter regularly (about 2x / day) - Even their "Elite" customer support is HORRIBLE... The two times I have called them, the people I've talked to have no clue what they are doing... I spent 10 min explaining to one of them the difference between firmware and software... - EXTREMELY sensitive buttons, this gets SUPER annoying really quickly. - Very, very bad support... Yesterday I gave it back and got an Astro A50 instead (I also ordered a Steelseries H Wireless on Amazon but It will get here next week). In comparison to the Elite 800's: + They are lighter + The setup is much simpler + The sound quality (out of the box) even though these are not broken in yet. There is more definition, specially in the chat. I have not tried movies/music yet. + They are definitely more comfortable. I used them yesterday for about 3h straight (I wear gaming glasses too) and I felt no discomfort whatsoever, after 5 minutes you forget they are even there. + Excellent connection quality, not a single hiccup I mean nothing, perfect audio stream for 3h straight. + Better positional audio feeling than the Elite 800's The negative: - It looks hmmm how to explain. It looks like they TRIED to make it look fancy but it looks (and feels) cheap. Bad finish. - VERY few controls and features. All you get is on/off, volume and Chat<>Game volume. (You have a master volume and you can go from 100%Game/0%Chat to 0%Game/100%Chat volume). - Only 3 sound profiles - No equalizer - No Bluetooth - Even though it comes with a nice 'stand', to charge them you still need to plug in a micro USB Cord to the headset. - Weird microphone boom stick. It's flexible but does not stay in place... and to mute it you tilt it up, but you have little to no feedback on it. - Absolutely no audio feedback on pretty much anything you do all the feedback you get from the headset is a really tiny LED. - No battery Indicator - No updates since 2013 (Firmware-wise) I'll update this after I get my hands on the Steelseries

2 RepliesTB x41. They've never let me down.
-
1 ReplyI use Logitech G430 and I prefer it over all the others I've tried both in sound quality and comfort.
-
Plus the DTS isn't real. It's DD converted to DTS on the headset.
-
1 ReplyAstro a 40s are and will remain to be one of the top, if not best headset on the market today, tritton headsets are equally great, if I were you I would avoid turtle beaches in general. If you're gonna try a different one why not try the new skull candy gaming headset, it has a 5 year warranty and well skull own astro so you know it'll be good. Cheers

Get the A40's

I've been looking for the answer for weeks... 2nd gen A50 or Elite 800? I've seen lot of youtube reviews and read all the comments. Some say that elite 800 is just not as good in sound quality as 2nd gen A50s. Some say that a50 has too much bass, and not enough medium and high to hear footsteps... Anyone has an answer? (42 is not accepteble)

3 RepliesEdited by cheapassgamer_99: 11/8/2014 9:30:23 PMSo anyone else besides the OP get these yet? I currently have the Skullcandy PLYR1 which has worse build quality but supposedly has similar sound quality to the astros. Hopefully there will be some Black Friday deals. Curious if the DTS-X actually helps with the surround. I've seen the demos but curious if it'll really matter for existing games and/or future ones if the developers don't specifically code for it? Also...I know its not stated officially, will these work for the Xbone? Past TB headsets with the separate wireless receivers (i.e. xp400, px4, px51, xp510, etc.) were cross compatible between consoles and all you had to do is plug the optical from the tb wireless receiver to the optical port in your respective console to get audio. Or better yet, just plug it directly to your receiver and TV and you shouldn't have to cable swap just switch hdmi inputs. Or are they purposely no longer allowing you to do this and nerfing it via firmware?
