What the Open World Needs

I believe making the open world feel more "Open" it needs a few things. Add whatever you believe it needs too. 1. Wildlife: I saw this moments ago and it got me thinking that it would make the world feel more alive. 2. Camps and/or caravans: Adding machines like the ones from the tower to distribute missions and possibly even make minor trades of some sort possible. 3. Weather: Changing weather would make the world seem more real and offer a new feel to the combat in roam making it feel more realistic in a way. And preferably regionally appropriate weather. Edit: the wildlife would not be what we have today but twisted creatures from the hive that look like animals roaming the planets and moons that they inhabit. And the camps or caravans could have guardians protecting the machines. Apparently people take these posts as demands for extreme content changes so I'll say this. These are only my ideas for what could be added in the future at some point not for what needs to be done by release. Please no comments stating that anyone has a bad idea, if you're not being positive you're being a hinderance.

Personally, the enemies need some relaxed animations with them hanging out when no one is within a certain range. That way it feels real less stagnant and more alive, it sucks to see static enemies which apparently have their own culture and life style as scavengers.

    • 1: Not a good idea. The reason being is that it's just more variables that have to be taken into account and it'll slow things down. 2 and 3: I'd like these things.

    • Some others have said it also but the enemies really needs to have a purpose for being there when your not fighting them. Like actually patroling or scavenging. Something so you dont feel like they are just waiting for you to kill them (even though that's the truth). They have their own cultutres so have some of it on display at least. Its more fun if I feel like I just busted up a scavenging party then a herd of grazing cattle.

Ground wildlife kinda wouldn't be realistic I mean did you see that massive line of cars with thousands of dead people in it? Whatever the collapse was could've killed ground animals or the fallen and hive already killed them I mean there are a ton of reasons why animals aren't on the ground maybe even the fact that the rest of the world was over taken by nature and the walls you are inside could be keeping them out... Just a couple of my thoughts on wildlife...

Okay, I have a topic I already posted about the invisible ceiling and the restrictions that have been placed on the world. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/66644198/0/0 Now, aside from what has been said in my previous topic and this topic, I agree with some of what has been said. I don't think the wildlife is a big deal. I am hoping that the invisible walls/ceilings will go away (edit:I think the turn back now should also be at the edge of the map, but not in the middle like my video I posted in my above linked topic). And the turn back now. I don't mind putting the invisible walls out in the middle of the ocean or something, you have to restrict some kind of movement, just not in the middle of the map please. I know bungie said that they developed the weather to a point that they don't fully control it, I am hoping that means in the final release that there is greater variety. I would like to see rain, full out storms, etc. I think playing with rain running down your faceplate would be awesome. Having the play through the rain...epic in my opinion. Takes me back to my military training in the rain. Playing in a dust storm on mars? A gale force storm in the tropical Venus areas. I am really hoping that all those areas you could see from the forgotten shores, like that plane graveyard will eventually open up. I would just love to explore. I hate to compare to World of Warcraft, but they did an awesome job of open world were exploring was awesome, no invisible ceilings, just impassible terrain. I am sure I will add more to this in a bit, but just some of my ideas.

          • I agree on the wildlife and weather points, the world would seem much more engaging if you had random encounters with them. Some others made comments like the flying jumps could have something added to them to make them more effective. there was multiple times where I would make a jump but since I had no way of controlling how high I went I my titan would end up French kissing an overhead beam while I had enemy ammo shoved up my exhaust pipe and I had no choice but to take it all in.

            • 1. Ok, but not entirely essential. Would make the world seem more alive, but I think wildlife would serve as more of a distraction than an asset. Who's to say there isn't wildlife in the final code, anyway? Bungie would be silly to show us their entire hand in the beta. 2. I like this idea a lot. Being able to buy emergency ammo, especially for the heavy weapons, is a good idea. But there'd have to be some kind of penalty, like everything being more expensive seeing as the merchants are risking their lives being out there constantly. Pointless for making room in your inventory though, as the "dismantle" option is there for clearing, unless you want to store something cool, in which case a Vault function of some kind would be welcome. 3. Yes. Very yes. Weather would be great, but as I said before, it may already be a prevalent feature in the full release, but was sidelined for the beta for possibly a feasible download size or superfluous reasoning?

              • I've been reading most I the comments, all are good but some are a little... Crazy. I think most people don't realize that there is a limit to all of this. If we could explore a whole world just think how long that would take to load. Not only that but I honestly don't think the system could handle that, that would be something like a PC thing. Just really think about it and think how much chaos that would be. We don't want GTA Online all over again...

Well, maybe the darkness could have killed off all or most wildlife? Except those crows when you first start for some reason. Edit+ I'm not sure how the hive works or even exactly what it is, maybe a virus/infection type thing, in which case hive animal could be possible, but they don't really seem the farming type...

              • The wildlife is a good idea, but they way they showed the Fallen and Hive is as hostile mobs that want everything for themselves, and that will do anything to take over Earth. If they are hostile enough to fight Fallen vs Hive for land I am sure they would be hostile enough to attack wildlife. BUT what if they could tame wild animals? Like some of the Fallens Vandals and the Hives Acolytes can have minor, deformed infected wildlife like wolves or some sort of hostile wildlife animal, then the "big bad bosses" can sometimes have huge wildlife likes bears and stuff!

                • You're right the open world does feel pretty restricted. Before the Beta I expected an open world like Fallout 3. In Old Russia all we get is a few relatively small open areas connected by short tubes. But I've accepted that. Even this pretty restricted world can be worked with. But they didn't. It's empty. There's nothing of particular interest to make it feel alive. The world as it is does not warrant further exploration. I mean sure we will get more planets in the full game, but those will only add a few hours of gameplay each. After that why should I spend time in the widely advertised "wild" if there's nothing for me to explore. The world is dead except for the enemies. The three points you listed could do much to alleviate this problem. 1. I'm not sure what kind of animal could have survived the darkness but I'm sure the Fallen keep some kind of pet. Maybe some twisted dog/cat companion could accompany some Fallen groups. I don't know how well this would work. I personally don't really need animals but I can see how they could make the world more alive. 2. Yes yes yes! Give us NPCs in the open world. I mean sure I get it, the other players are supposed to signify the presence humanity has in the wild, but come on! Some random guy bunny hopping around the map or randomly dancing in the middle of a battlefield is not really immersive. In the Forgotten Shore there is this crumbling building with the relay thingy that you have to activate in some mission. Instead of putting yet another boring group of Fallen inside, how about you make it into a heavily fortified outpost. The terrain is perfectly defendable and the ruins provide great cover. Put a small group of NPC guardians in there. One could be the commander of the outpost who gives you little side quests that explore some of the history of Old Russia or the Fallen. Another one could be the quartermaster who can trade with you in the field. And every now and the there could be a huge public event where you have to defend the outpost against wave after wave of enemies with only a limited amount of lives, like good old firefight in ODST. 3. While dynamic weather would be awesome even set weather changes for a public event or a mission would be very cool. Fighting a Fallen Tank in a thunderstorm could be an impressive experience. I know it's just a beta but the way I see it, we got to see the first 5-10% of the finished game. There is nothing major they will change in one month. And by major I mean anything beyond minor stat fixes for some vehicles and weapons. That means everything I just wrote is more or less meaningless because it's not going to be implemented anyway. However I like thinking about stuff like this and how a game could be better(at least in my eyes). And who knows maybe they will release DLC that makes the world more interesting and gives NPCs something to say. I'm not holding my breath. I just hope they've been holding out on us and there's more substance to the final game than what we already have.

                    • Totally agree weather & camps would be so great! I was thinking that only having the one vendor was a bit boring too. I want to explore and find some merchant from beyond the wall selling scavenged at mementos from our alien oppressors etc.
