Bungie fanboys in a nutshell

"343 butchered the Halo series. They turned my beloved sterilized brick into an actual person with actual emotions. Things were better before ThreeFailThree took over" I only have one question to those who think Bungie has the better story telling experience of the two. Why do you think this? I've asked a million times and nobody has given me a straightforward, reasonable, and logical explanation to their opinion

    Hint: Be Wary Of [u][b]Opinion[/b][/u] Below. Why is it so hard to accept people liked him the way he was? They are entitled to their opinion and preference whether it seems odd or illogical to you or not. Why do you want to argue with someones [u][i][b]opinion[/b][/i] [/u]on why they liked something better a certain way? They don't like pickles on their sandwich, and you want to convince them they are wrong? I could simply say, I liked him when he was borderline silent badass,cool,calm,collect, going through re-entry,dropping bombs, etc, I liked his sarcasm, liked the one liners. I liked when Him and Cortana gave off this Partners Vibe. He talked as needed,spoke with action. Characters like Chief,Link,Duke Nukem,,DoomGuy,Dante to an extent, Ryu Hayabusa,Cloud,Squall,Samus,Gordon Freeman, Don't go on about their feelings,let alone speak much, or have enough emotions to be what you consider an "actual person", Dante is just a bunch of "cool" and one liners(DMC2 he was pretty stoic), and people like those characters . Not every-one wants a conflicted broken hero,with vulnerable emotions,they act like there nothing more to a person outside of those.There is more to a person than just being Sad,depressed,hurt,insecure,conflicted. The same happen to Ninja Gaiden 3,and people did not like it, He didn't speak much,did his job,spoke little, then all of a sudden he was given internal conflict, questioning his humanity,role in life, so on and so forth...It wasn't well received with the story either. Same goes for Samus, they gave her "emotions",mainly fear,insecurity,shell shock so on and so forth. People didn't like it. (even though Other M was based of an old manga) You like Am I man or machine Chief?343i Chief I liked him as bungie called him in one of the art books "The Stoic Hero" "Man of few words" "when he speaks the statement is both Heroic and Stoic""but his lineage goes back much further than that." You Could say why did I like that Brick? I could say why did you like that broken shell of a man? at the end of day It's just personal preference & You don't have to have all these emotions & internal conflict to be liked by people. and not everyone is looking for that or someone to relate to in a game, Oh my he's sad, I've been sad before,We're so much alike. Didact's character can't stand without other media(Sad because he's actually interesting). he appears like 3 times,then I "kill" him,PERSONALLY I hate reoccurring defeated/beaten villains this isn't a comic book. It was SO drama heavy,my goodness...The drama. His relationship with Cortana was just weird in that one,he acted like she was like his sole purpose for living. Honestly, What did you learn about Master Chief that was SOOOO different from when Bungie's had it?, that he was broken at his core & anti-social? All he did was talk EVERY given moment. (Which kills me when I hear Lasky: You don't talk much, do you?") display general concern for Cortana which we'd seen before, then he was sad at the end. wow,much depth. The reason they had to say things like that constantly is because the character didn't portray it well. you hear that man or machine line at least 3 times,let alone other humanity related dialogue. had they never said anything along those lines,you probably wouldn't even assume/feel he was having humanity issues..just talking a lot. at the end, he was slumped over,removed armor ,wrinkly face, the end. = the point they were tying to make but didn't until the end.. You see this supposed broken,tired,hurt man. So to me, Constantly talking chief had about as much Depth as Silent Chief. I simply prefer Bungie's. then they did the whole go to point A,B,C like 3 or 4 times. cut off all 3 panels, cut off all 3 generators etc, This is another topic I guess, but playing the campaign levels themselves were not memorable. Were Past Halo stories flawless? No,but they had some fun & Memorable levels though. I honestly think the people who come for the story MIGHT be the minority. The Story didn't turn everyone away by itself,there is the lackluster PLAYABLE part of Spartan-Ops,and of course Multiplayer. I didn't like the story, stayed for MP, after 4 months of telling myself,This game is awesome, I accepted I didn't like it and that was that. Something is clearly wrong when the population drops that fast,and 343i clearly saw and acknowledged it. This is an [u][b]opinion[/b][/u] and should be treated a such. wow,wall...wasn't aiming for that. My bad.

      343 industries made Halo 4. You'd think at least one of those industries would do something right.

      • Ahem, "343 butchered the Halo series. They turned my beloved you're-the-hero character into a person who I don't like, equally ruined the rest of the existing characters, and introduced assholes so that you are the hero because you disobeyed orders, that thing from every single modern military shooter that never happened in Bungie's Halo. Things were better before ThreeFailThree took over."

          • I don't mind the story, liked the Bungie era better... But the game turned to CoD in Space. Thats what I got mad at.

          • Bungie's telling of the Halo story is more linear than 343's. When Bungie was in charge, they crafted a universe that was designed to tell one, singular story, through 3 games. The environments, the interaction, the gameplay is what suggested the deep, mysterious universe that was "classic Halo." They didn't need to explain everything because it didn't need to be. It wasn't about the Master Chief. It wasn't about the Arbiter. It was humanity versus the biggest struggle they have ever faced. This "emotionless brick" was designed to be YOU. He isn't some fleshed out character. He's just soldier who shoots aliens in a complex world. I have some faith in 343, but let's face it: they inherited this world, created by Bungie, at a time where it was around for 10 years. Halo isn't young anymore and 343 knows it. So what can they do? Expand. 343's goal is to expand this beloved place which is already pretty huge. It's Star Wars calibre now and they can only make it bigger. They will continue the story. Which, in my opinion, is all any Halo fan can ask for. [i]It's not over. Not yet.[/i]

              bungie = better cathartic/emotional/atmospheric storytelling 343 = better cerebral story experience/canonical detail both = incredibly underappreciated in the story based video game community. and before some person jumps in without realizing the obviousness that everything in this post is an opinion, this is an opinion.

                  Am I correct in saying that most of the back story stuff that makes the Halo universe as deep as it is now, wasn't actually written by Bungie? I'm referring to all the books and stuff that are considered canon now obviously.

                  • I was never a big halo fan That said I have played all the halos except for 2 And there was a VERY distinct difference between 4 and the rest I still can't put it into words But I think I can see why the fan base is upset It's because they fell in love with something that they were told would continue But instead took a very steep turn in the other direction In most people's eyes I can imagine it was like they'd been married to someone for so long and all of the sudden that same person one day up and did something shocking enough to cause them to want a divorce While in most onlookers eyes they only see a disarray of absent minded over reactions You just can't say "the story is so deep now!" It's more so Where it started from and where it is now don't add up to those that are really die hard fans Now the rest of the people who don't fall under die hard fans but instead pretend to be Are just idiots looking to be accepted by the die hards

It's not like 343i completely butchered known characters and their personalities either. Nope, not at all.

                          • Because first of all, what the hell is with this new species? Barely anything about the covenant and nothing regarding the arbiter or the truce! Secondly, bungie spends a whole decade without showing chief's face then "OH I have an idea! Lets show his face is our first game!" He was the image of gaming and the mystery of master chief was one of the most beloved things about him! Then they decide to kill off cortana! Its just not the same game bungie created their legacy off of. I miss them and sorely hate 343 because of their ignorance of the work bungie has done. They spat in the face of every previous halo with one game. Theres your answer.

                              Here is my personal issue. I wanted John and Cortana left adrift. I wanted that story to end. No big, I enjoyed parts of Halo 4. I'm no hater. But, now, modding old Bungie games and reselling them? Nah, That's shameful. Maybe they can win me back with Halo 5, I think they have some great game developers there. I like that they are the Halo fans and keep expanding the story lore and universe. But, Whoever is leading the topend decision-making for 343 sucks and I hope they feel bad about their effect on gaming. A little piece of me wants to see some of their bad choices fail. That's just me. I'm probably too much a fan to be logical about it. It doesn't bother me if people feel differently.

                              • Color is a big thing for gamers. It sets the tone, and halo 4, what's this? They introduce us to orange! Not a huge difference, but it is noticeable.

                                  • I don't think they have better storytelling, but I preferred a lack of storytelling to a story I didn't like. 343i tried things like character development, but I don't really give points for simply doing something-- it has to actually work.

                                    • The main reason I dislike 343i is because they added the lame weaponized killstreak system to Halo. Definitely not the direction I would have liked the game to go.

                                    • Myself, I only ever liked Halo CE. I do like the semi lack of storytelling, than the over the top stuff that Halo 4 tried to push. I mean, to compare, it's like giving Chell or Gordon Freeman a voice in Half-Life 3 and Portal 3, it comes from out of left field... And don't get me started on the "new" alien weapons in Halo 4... EXACT copies of human weapons except for different colours... Even the Covenant weapons were slightly different (some of them anyway).
