Couldn't find an answer to my question on google, the Destiny Wiki, or forums, so here it is:
What do the elemental symbols next to weapons mean in Destiny? For example, one of my sniper rifles has a fire symbol next to it. Another has a snowflake symbol.
I've heard that this has something to do with countering certain weapons or classes, but how exactly?

1 ReplyThe elements simply mean arc (blue), solar (orange) or void (purple) damage. Elemental damage is used to counter shields of the same colour, so for instance use arc against fallen captains because their shields are blue, solar against hive wizards because theirs are orange etc etc

Edited by MysticJon: 7/21/2014 11:02:57 PMSolar damage has a chance to ignite unshielded enemies causing damage over time. Arc damage does increases damage to shielded enemies and has a chance of arcing from one enemy to another damaging multiple enemies at once. Void damage deals some sort of impact/gravity damage. Not sure exactly what this one does. Some elements also deal greater damage to certain enemies. Hive enemies take greater damage from Solar element weapons for example. And Arc damage weapons can take down an enemies' shield more quickly (including in the Crucible).

Edited by DigiOps: 7/21/2014 9:24:45 PMWeapons will have kinetic (no element), solar, void, and arc damage types. Some enemies are weaker to specific elements. I believe Hive units are especially weak to solar. I wouldn't be surprised if Vex were weak to arc damage. These damage types also seem to align with subclasses and their abilities. I can't say whether or not they grant protection from certain elements, but they appear to deal these damage types via their abilities and supers.

2 RepliesRefers to damage type, I take it some enemies will be susceptible to particular elements.
