Why are American universities among the best in the world?
But the public schools are at the bottom of the barrel?

Whereas in Europe you take classes that only relate to your degree, in US we take a broad range of classes that do not necessarily directly relate to our degree but in some way relate indirectly. Ie. a marketing major may have to take an accounting class even though that person may never do accounting in his or her life. That's one difference. Other than that, I don't know.

Not all public schools. A lot are roughly equal in quality with European public schools. However, we have too many outliers in the inner cities.

A lot of our public schools aren't that bad, that's really just a common misconception. But just like every country, we have "hoods" or inner cities that are horrible in our big cities. And them rural areas are bad too. The USA just has a lot of that stuff.

Public schools are more mid level than bottom of the barrel(pretty near the UK), and Uni's are at the top because they are super competitive with each other, because they are ran closer to a corporation(think Google vs Microsoft vs Apple when compared to Harvard vs Yale vs Duke) than government funded education. /thread
