So we've all seen Destiny gameplay, some of you even lucky enough to play the alpha. My question is- What do you all think of the floating damage numbers that accompany each shot landed? Is this a helpful feature or a nuisance? Do you think Bungie will give us the option to disable them if we please?
I personally prefer to have a cleaner UI with as little on my screen as possible. It really helps me to "get into" a game and feel like I'm actually there when there isn't a bunch of HUD, mini map, bullet count, etc on the screen.
The biggest problem I noticed is that the damage numbers pop up right on your target which could make seeing your full target difficult. This can be especially problematic when trying to land headshots with a weaker fully automatic weapon. Your thoughts?
**EDIT** This for me is mostly a concern for PvP. We are only shooting other humanoid shaped targets, so we all know that critical hits are the headshots.
In PvP when you start shooting your target it shows you their health/shield bar. This, combined with the fast kill times make the scrolling damage numbers pretty pointless and annoying.

You do not need to completely destroy the HUD however one thing that bugs me is the floating numbers. I want to take a look back at your other game for example halo 3, the immersion and impact you felt when you punched an elite and saw there sheild go but now when I punch a vandal there's just a number and no impact at all. I'm not saying you have to take it out as it can be useful but please make it an option. I mean it can't be that hard to add an option.

It will be useful for the min/maxers - but a color coded display registering hit damage would fit more immersively in the world and reduce screen clutter.

3 RepliesNever bothered me. It shows how much damage you do and if you are actually getting crits off. It's pretty important actually.
-
I actually liked it when i played Borderlands. I'm thinking it's going to be about the same.
-
I agree that they're in the way but I also like knowing when I'm hitting headshots with the yellow numbers. I hope they can find a compromise, perhaps by changing the colour of the hitmarkers instead and just removing the numbers altogether.
-
The floating number are of borderlands its to say how much damage ur doing to the enemies or other opponents

1 ReplyI hate floating numbers. They do nothing for me. I'll just shoot till they're dead anyway. Obviously they are important when fighting bosses and finding their weaknesses but pvp doesn't need then. If given the option, I'd turn them off.

In PvP I found the number kinda clouded my vision. In PvE it is definitely awesome to have the numbers.

Edited by mja calg: 7/12/2014 6:19:01 PMI never played the Alpha (Xbox owner) but did watch a lot of video of game play. I did not see the need for the floating damage numbers in PvP - in PvE it might be useful. In Halo Reach you can turn this on or off for Campaign (it didn't show up near your target though) - but it never shows up for PvP - which is the way I would prefer it. I would be interested in opinions from people whom did play PvP and if it interfered with their aim - especially head shots or when firing from the hip. It seemed to me it would be a distraction.

4 RepliesMy first thought was.... That has to be optional.... I enjoy seeing it in Pve, but it instantly annoyed me in pvp. Keep in mind however that I have not played, and am forming opinions based off of gameplay videos only.

Honestly there really needs to be an option to turn the floaty numbers off. They are more annoying and immersion breaking than anything and are really only helpful for unknown boss fights. If Bungie wants to stand by the "Destiny isn't and MMO" statement there had better be an option.
-
The numbers are just one of the things that make a good rpg just cause you don't like dont mean nothing
-
Fine with it, what bothered me most was same damage over most of the time with a given weapon. I saw very little damage variation on most mobs.
-
Like how numbers turned yellow when it was a critical hit. The numbers never bothered me. You actually don't really notice when your playing. On another note... I don't understand the HUD map
-
I feel you. Idc really how much I'm doing.. It would be good to figure how powerful your weapon is that's really it... Other than that shoot em till there dead.
-
Hopefully they are optional. Will most likely end up being a nuisance coming towards end game content, but there should still be some notification that you're hitting your target (I.e. dots instead of numbers to clean up the UI a bit)
-
I need it there. Just like in Diablo III. Having damage confirmed makes me feel like actually doing damage.
-
After awhile the floating numbers start to blend in to the background and all I see is my enemy in my crosshairs.
-
Its similar to Borderlands and it's a helpful feature
-
3 RepliesI don't mind it in pve but in pvp it's annoying.
-
I love the damage numbers. They help you find areas on bosses that do the most damage and show you how much damage each of your weapons are actually doing.
-
Reminds me of borderlands...
-
floating damage numbers makes the game feel more unique, i think its a great idea to put in the game which they already put in the game because..it was..a great idea
-
I like it, tho .. i think players should have the option to have it turned off tho.
-
2 RepliesWho cares you're still buying it and you're gonna like it
-
2 RepliesDamage numbers really help you feel the strength of your gun and know if you're hitting weak points. Damage numbers are not in PVP.
