The best 1TB SSD for your PlayStation 4

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/why/forGamer.html I recently bought a PlayStation 4 and as we all know it comes with a 500gb HDD. With Destiny needing at least 40gb to download maybe more as updates release makes you wonder how long for the life of the console before you run out of space. Sony has made it user friendly to upgrade your hdd or change it completely with a ssd, hybrid hard drive or bigger hdd for more space if needed. I know that there are cheaper 1tb ssd's out there as the 1TB Samsung 840 Evo could cost you as much as the system itself but if you look at the overall investment, it could very well pay off. The consoles seems to be going All Digital, which isn't necessarily a bad thing as places like Gamestop rips people off, but ask yourself this. Is 500gb enough? With the Samsung Evo you get 500 more gigabytes, better gameplay and less lag. You also get faster download times for those big downloads. Look at all my links to see how easy it is to install. Sorry for the incorrect punctuation as I am typing from a phone and please feel free to comment. http://m.ign.com/videos/2013/11/15/how-to-upgrade-a-ps4-hard-drive-ign-strategize

  • Look into a sshd(hybrid drive) thats what im getting. Very close times to a ssd but 1tb storage and only about $100 or so. They are maybe a second or two slower than a ssd.

  • Its been tested and proven SSDs dont nearly get utilized of their full potential by consoles such as the ps4. We're talking about mere seconds or two increased performance with consoles and thats only in things such as loading a game downloaded on the SSD itself. Not worth outspending the price of the ps4 itself for a SSD. Literally. Studies have been done, look it up. I was interested in this myself a while ago, but after seeing the research I got a regular 1 terabyte HDD.

The PS4 doesn't have a solid state drive. It has a hard disk drive that you would find in an average laptop. SSD's only benefit is faster load times and you're not getting those benefits on PS4. Stick to HDD's. You can get more storage space at a cheaper price compared to an SSD with an equal amount of storage.

BUT... that is only ONE area of improvement when upgrading to an SSD. load times when starting the game. in a MMORPG you will find it quite common to be around any multitude of players at any time. these players can be all quite active too. like battling, using actions, making noises and etc. it is going to now be in highly populated areas that the difference between an SSD and HDD will shine. basically it's about seek times. again the HDD relies on moving parts to move and seek out data on the plate. if the game requires the HDD to seek out data from multiple locations on the plate... well this usually isn't a problem. however if there are TOO many locations to seek data out from. then the HDD will fall behind. and play sounds/animations at a delay, or not even at all. this sort of behavior will be more noticeable if you are constantly rotating your camera. and that is true for either the PS3 or PS4 using an HDD. though other things like texture/object pop-ins shouldn't even be happening on the PS4. stream-ins should hardly be noticeable, if at all. and that's even if you are still using an HDD. and even loading is rather quick. but even still i was testing with Contrast HDD vs SSD. and Contrast still managed to load about 2x as quick with the SSD as opposed to the HDD. if you are going to be playing any one of the MMORPG's to come out to the PS4 platform... an SSD is 100% worth getting. and they really aren't that expensive anymore. in-fact they have been non-stop going on sale for the past few weeks. and will continue to drop in prices as newer technologies are released.

      • Just curious, but has anyone put an ssd in and noticed heat issues? I would suspect because of the 4's sub-optimal flowthrough and the added on surface heat of an ssd that this would become an issue especially in the light of the heat issues at launch with the standard drive

        • I was thinking about getting a 1TB SSD but odds are I'm just going to settle for a 1TB HDD when I get enough games that warrant a new one.

              • Why the f*ck would you buy an SSD? They cost way more than HDDs, and the PS4 doesn't properly utilize them. There's virtually no benefit to buying one for the PS4, when you can buy 2TB HDDs for 80$.

                  • Wouldn't a 1TB SSD be almost as much as a PS4 itself?

                    • Considering the price of an 840 EVO, was it worth buying a PS4 in the first place?

                    • EVO is a great series but I can't help to think if you're going to be constantly writing to it if the Pro series might be a better investment. Writing to the SSD causes it to reduce its life span and Pro though significantly more costly would protect you from failure over the life of the console. Just a thought.

                      • The ps4 doesn't support external hard drives, you have to replace the internal one with a bigger hard drive
