READ BEFORE VOTING
Destiny, Bungie’s newest exquisite videogame, is filled with breathtaking visuals and compelling gameplay, and that’s after only playing the Alpha and Beta versions, although there is one major flaw that’s been brought to my attention: Destiny lacks proximity chat, which is the ability to speak with other players whom are near you. Currently, players can wave to each other, dance with each other, and point at things “in a desperate, and futile, attempt at communication” (SoloPopo). Players can’t make new friends, talk about strategies, nor ask for assistance.
With proximity chat, players can get to know each other and share their experiences they’ve had in Destiny. Maybe you just want to compliment someone’s awesome armor and be on your way. Players would be able to talk about how they’ll complete an event or where to find some loot. Imagine trying to strategize by pointing everywhere. Players would be able to ask for assistance during combat. Imagine fighting enemies with a few other players, and when you get cornered, all you can do is point at them and dance for your life.
Destiny is based on the notion of being always-online and multiplayer. If everyone is a mute, then what is the point? As SoloPopo said, “It's ridiculous, and kills the immersion. Why are other players even in the game if you can't interact with them?” Being able to wave and point is fine if you don’t have a headset plugged in, but it should be optional, because being able to speak is a much better alternative.
Proximity chat should be the next feature implemented in Destiny. In GameInformer's interview with Lars Bakken, Bungie's multiplayer lead, Bakken stated "We know that, not just in multiplayer, that in general, when you get into a game with someone that you don't know or someone that you've never seen before and may never see again, they have this power to completely destroy your entire experience and maybe ruin the game for you forever" (Manuch). If another player is being obnoxious and you want to disable proximity chat, you can simply switch between three chat settings: Proximity, Fire Team, and Off. This feature would also require the following settings.
Chat Settings:
Proximity - Chat with players near you.
Fire Team - Chat with your Fire Team. (A symbol appears above your head to non-fire team members which indicates that you cannot chat.)
Off - You can't hear anyone in-game, nor can they hear you. (A symbol appears above your head to all players which indicates that you cannot chat. This setting would also be activated upon joining an Xbox LIVE party and whatever the similar chat system is called on Playstation consoles.)
Orrr
Proximity Chat: On/Off, and you can always hear and speak to your Fire Team.

Here's an additional feature Coffeenator requested in the comments:
One feature I would add to the prox. chat is a kind of karma system where if someone gest muted by some number of people in a period of time that they are muted in-game for everyone except for players in their fire team if they are in one. Over time their Karma would get better and they would be unmuted until they would get muted enough to go over the threshold again.
You should definitely have the option to have it on and talk to other players around. If you get annoyed turn it off. It should be easy to access. Place the option on the back button where you access your ghost.
-
Or you know a mute specific player option like all games have? In the roster it shows everyone in your area and you can inspect them from this menu so why not just add a press "square" to toggle mute? I do agree 3 modes and this mute selectively would work well.

Edited by lordvikagaming: 8/7/2014 6:40:25 PMProximity chat should always be turned on, and you can't be heard unless you are within extreme close range like 1 or 2 meters away. Since there will be no matchmaking for raids in Destiny then proximity chat is the next best thing, be able talk to people in the tower outside your fire team to get more to join up would be a good thing, as well as in open world maps you can warn others when they are in danger, since explore maps can be entered solo, having a proximity chat would be an asset. It would be even better for pvp because i love being able trash talk with people i kill or get killed by that's in close range

Thread should've been noticed by now. Majority up votes too, hopefully they implement it for the full game.
-
Anyone voting yes will end up disliking this feature.
-
you can't talk to people but you can dance on their corpse. makes sense.
-
Proxy chat sounds good. The most interaction I've had with other players so far is getting kills stolen in Old Russia. I don't even get revived while exploring even if someone is right next to me. There is no incentive to be friendly, so people just ignore each other.

-
This needs to happen!
-
Just give me plain old team chat, so I can talk to the random people in strikes and PvP on my team.
-
You could also do it so if you focus in someone L3 you can talk to them. Although this way you could not have group chats (more than 2 people)

Edited by No Name 5: 8/7/2014 7:32:34 PMI must have the best luck ever. I almost never hear trash talk or little kids or music. In fact my main problem with chat is that I hardly ever hear anyone. But everytime voice chat is brought up all I hear is this notion that it is filled with little kids talking about sleeping with my mom or questioning my sexuality.

Edited by SaferMurderweapon: 8/7/2014 6:40:15 PMVery good post. Bump.

Text chat for the general area you're in while in the tower or outside a mission would be better. It could even link to the Destiny app so the chat window would be on your phone.
-
Wow 88% that's about the same amount of people who voted pro marijuana legislation in a poll taken to forecast the vote coming up in Florida in November. Get out and vote.

Edited by sergeantawesome: 8/7/2014 1:14:12 AMIf it's off by default I'm o.k. with it, not on. I don't want to be forced into listening to some stupid conversation or rap music, and have to mute every time I hear something. This game does not have a pause function and the menu is the last place I want to be when getting shot at.
-
This would make the game a lot better than what it is. Options don't hurt and the people that say "no" are just trolls.
-
This would make the game pretty good
-
This is a great idea.
-
Yes as an option, LOTS of times in free roam i had to try & hide so i could read a message from someone wanting me to help them, in the middle of a firefight theres no pausing and isnt it supposed to be a Group world teaming up? without chat it's kinda a hassle & boring at times LoL
-
You see another guardian in the field and if you are with in hearing range you give them a wave (chat invite). The other guardian waves back (invite accepted), and voila! Y'all are chattin'! The two of you walk out of hearing range and the chat session has ended.
-
Only in certain areas. The tower would get too cluttered with voices. But a public event, or explore, that would be fine.
-
Of course it should be. I'm going to immediately set mine to "off," but options never killed anybody.
-
They better add chat, we pay for live. Give us the feature to communicate with each other!
