Proximity Chat is Not an Option

https://alpha.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post?id=33335 (Must be signed in) It's an absolute necessity. I was enormously disappointed; after at first being enormously exited, to run into the first players I met, only to discover that there is no means of meaningful communication. Every player I've encountered so far dances, points, and waves, in a desperate, and futile, attempt at communication. It's ridiculous, and kills the immersion. Why are other players even in the game if you can't interact with them? Without proximity chat, Destiny is just an elaborate, muted Halo Co-op Campaign. Destiny is advertised as having an open world environment, and as such there should be as little restriction as possible. Bungie's games are founded on a core concept, and Destiny is the fullest realization of that concept: sand box freedom. The ideal is an enormous game world, free of restrictions. Restrictions need to be avoided at all costs. ALL costs. Whatever legal reason behind the decision to deny proximity chat is trivial when juxtaposed against Destiny's would be unrivaled success. There should be on option to mute players when you hover your crosshair over them; it doesn't even matter if it's on or off by default, but there must be an option to activate proximity chat without the need to join a team, which comes with a level reset and a complete break from the world you were just immersed in, only to start all over with two other players you aren't even sure you like yet. At the moment there might as well be no other players in the game world. You can already queue up matchmaking to find a team before the game begins. The fact that other silent entities exist in the game world is ENTIRELY MOOT; it's completely insignificant at the moment. There is no debate. If Destiny is going to be an "MMO," there needs to be proximity chat. Common Bungie, don't let something so little hinder a game so great. This is thin ice. +1 if you agree https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzCsOwMtqJg&feature=youtu.be Edit: Video of my first lack luster Destiny social experience. Also, it doesn't really matter if Destiny is called an MMO or not; neither does it matter that most MMOs use text communication instead of voice communicaiton (keyboards are useful, huh?) Pettifogging every last detail of my post doesn't change that Destiny would benefit from proximity chat.

  • It should be the default option. But there should also be options in the menu that allow you to limit voice chat to fireteam only / to nobody, if you want. I don't know if this is already an option, since chat is fireteam only, but you should also be able to mute specific players via the player list in the menu. imo.

  • I made a thread where people can post social features to help Destiny be a more social experience (which, at its core, is what many feel it to be): http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/67144346/0/0 While we may have lost the opportunity to get Proximity Chat, there's still a ton of different common and out-of-the-box features alike that we could implement to help players get the social functions they desire and need!

    • I think it should be in the game, but proximity chat should be a selectable option so that you can decide whether or not to hear random people you meet. This would quench the desires of those who want it and those who don't. Also, it would be a good parental control for the younger players.

    • The alpha site has been down for a while. Why does proximity hat bug you so much. Use the tools given to you. Go up to the person interact with them and send them a message, invite to fire team, use the consoles chat systems be it type or voice chat. Either use the in-game features or systems features. If you really wanted to talk then a few extra clicks is nothing.

    • As someone who pretty much never uses public chat but always listens to it, I have to admit it's quite strange running into other people and... nothing. I think it would certainly be useful in situations (I've been in a few public events where there was a major lack of coordination and being able to direct people would've been helpful) but the fact that it filters stupidity out of my experience is great. Also, for the bristling hub of activity that the Tower appears to be it's just too quiet. Again though, the idea is that it's for the better.

      • As long as the entirety of proximity chat is something you can toggle on and of in the settings menu with one click. No one should have any reason to be against having it as a toggle able option

        • It's an alpha. The game is not complete. And there are arguments for and against. I think a system where you could easily request to chat with someone near you and/or have settings to control it would be a good compromise(maybe a hot button to turn it on and off). I definitely do not want to hear whining 12 year olds swearing like sailors everywhere I go in the game.
