As a gamer I support split screen and even voted yes in the survey. As a game developer here is why they can't do it, and it is unfortunately very simple. Quoted from http://www.gamespot.com/articles/e3-2014-bungie-s-destiny-doesn-t-support-split-screen-co-op/1100-6420387/
"We're actually not supporting split-screen in Destiny," Bungie community manager Eric Osborne told GameSpot during E3 this week. "We love split-screen. Obviously we have a legacy of supporting it. We know a lot of players love it. We love it. But we really wanted to untether guardians. Even if you're in a fireteam, you can go wherever you want. That level of freedom was really important for us. We know some players really like split-screen. Ultimately, you can't build a game to suit every single player out there."
The tether he refers to is due to the limitations of either the system or the software. In any case, they can't run two instances of the game at the same time and still allow players the freedom that they want their game to have. This also means they can't run a single instance of the game and keep the players close to each other. Further, it is implied they have tried to figure it out and determined it was outside of the scope of the project. It would seem the last logical change would be to change the core mechanics and that is too big a cost this far in the life cycle. So whether we like it or not, they have determined that no one will be tied to each other and not be able to roam free. Sorry friends, this is a dead topic no matter how much we want it. Trust me I would love to be wrong here because this means I won't be able to play this with my wife.

 • So why can't we have split-screen in competitive scenarios only then?

 • Seems reasonable as long as the definition of the map is not simply a barrier in the larger world. Similar to a basic map in any other FPS then it should be fine. If it is just a section of the world that you can leave at will then that creates the same problem.

 • Exactly! Split screen in the Crucible game type (PvP) seems like it would be easy to implement since you don't engage in the persistent open world to access it.

 • Even if they did decide to do this, it would not be something that can be done quickly. So no matter what it will not be there at release. I do really like the idea of at least being able to do it in PvP.

 • True, I'm alright with that. Got to be, right? But implementing it in Crucible would be a cakewalk compared to complete open-world gameplay.
