First and foremost, a disclaimer:
I was lucky enough to be invited to join in some early testing of Destiny. In just the few weeks between the pre-alpha and the alpha, there were significant changes to graphics, weapons, items, and AI behavior. So please keep in mind, whatever I mention here is subject to change. Also note, the pre-alpha and alpha were only limited experiences of the game. Do not assume that the few things I talk about here are the complete Destiny experience. Also, keep in mind I am approaching this from the perspective of a Halo MM fan, and trying to answer the questions I would ask someone that got to play, so I may gloss over or emit entirely facets of the game I didn't feel like writing about.
What is Destiny?
Is it an MMO? Not really. Borderlands? Not really. Halo? Not really. Imagine a cross between Red Dead Redemption, Diablo, Borderlands, Battlefield, and Halo. It, for the most part, has Halo style movement, vehicles, gun mechanics, and visual style. It also has a Diablo-style loot system throughout all it's various gameplay modes. It has several gameplay modes that will remind you of games from other genres. Those gameplay modes will be described below.
Free Roam/Explore
You have free roam style play that is like Red Dead Redemption, but a more limited area. In the Alpha, we were shown one free roam map, in Old Russia on Earth. I assume this is not the only free roam area, but it the only one we were allowed to see. In this mode, enemy hoardes respawn, as do random collectibles and loot chests. In this mode, randomized side missions can be activated. Completing side missions, finding loot/collectibles, and wiping out crowds of enemies will help you level up your character, weapons, and advance your faction reps. You can go alone or bring a fireteam of up to three. You will see others roaming the area with you, but the number of other players is limited. This is where the public events pop up. Public events, at least in the alpha, don't bring in players from other games. They simply draw the attention of all the fireteams in the game. In the pre-alpha, these events launched regularly and were pretty easy. In the Alpha, they were more rare, and much more difficult. Frequency and difficulty seems to be something they can change very rapidly, so I expect that how often you see them and how hard they are will continue to change before launch.
Strikes
Strikes will remind you more of Borderlands or Diablo. A more linear mission with a loot boss at the end. In this mode, you can bring a team of three, or be matched with other players to get 3. In the alpha, we were shown a raid called "The Devil's Lair", which also takes place on Old Russia. The raid actually takes place on a section of the free roam map, that gets repurposed for the strike. In all reality, I'd imagine the raid, strike, and story maps were created first and incorporated into the free roam map, much in the same way Reach multi-player spaces were incorporated into the single player campaign. It features specific objectives scripted events and a boss at the end. Completing strikes, like In diablo, are about finding loot.
Missions
In addition to free roam and raids, you can also choose to complete story missions. Story missions are a lot like raids in that they are more linear and have a boss likely to drop you some loot. The missions (er. at least the one provided in the alpha) are narrated by Peter Dinklage, and provide the story behind the Destiny Universe.
Tower
The Tower is the social hub of Destiny. It's where you can exchange collectibles and find all the items and upgrades you need between game sessions. There is no combat found at the Tower, just vendors, beach balls, and dancing. When you visit the tower, there will be other fireteams and players there with you. It does attempt to pair you with friends and friends of friends, so the tower is a good place to run into familiar faces and gather a group to go into the Crucible or attempt co-op missions with.
Crucible
The crucible is competitive matchmaking where guardians square off against each other. It was not included in the pre-alpha experience. It was added to the alpha, which I've been playing for less than a week, so keep in mind anything said about Crucible play are just initial impressions.
How the RPG, Missions, and PvP All Fit Together
On the co-op side of the game (missions, explore, raids, strikes, etc.), all your gear carries seemlessly between outings. The better loot you have, the easier it will be to cull the AI hordes. Now when you venture into PVP, you still carry all your gear, but the gear stats are all evened out for everyone. You'll still look like you, but your level 50 armor won't perform any better than level 1 armor. Same with guns. You'll have your guns with your sights and firing properties, but that attack skill will no longer matter. I'm am not sure to what extent armor "perks" carry over. Some armor grants faster reload speed, or more ammo capacity. I have not tested to see if these perks are changed at all for PVP. So, all your stuff always comes with you no matter what you are playing, but gets sanitized in PVP to remove level advantages.
Character
For character options, you can choose one of three races. There are Humans, EXO (robots), and Awoken (goth kids). Which one you choose doesn't seem to have a bearing on gameplay so far. You can choose a gender, and customize your face. You must also choose a class. Classes are Hunter, Warlock, and Titan. WHat class you choose determines your super abilities and what kind of combat your armor bonuses are geared towards. Hunters are long-range killers with a golden gun attack. Warlocks are multi-role fighters with a nova bomb attack. Titans are CQB with a shoulder charge attack. Your character can hold 9 different items in each equipment/armor slot.

14 RepliesEdited by Obi Wan Stevobi: 6/10/2014 7:05:11 PMPage 2 Weapons All the standard guns from past Halo games make an appearance, though they all have slightly different properties. You can find the one that works best for you. I am going to guess the weapons may be shifted around even before the beta, because shotties and snipers are kind of running rampant right now in the special slot. Weapons can be leveled up by scoring points with them. Upgrading a weapon can improve it's damage, and give you different sight options.
Primary Weapons SCOUT RIFLE - Think DMR, long-range, single shot, huge critical hit bonuses, headshot weapon PULSE RIFLE - Think BR, mid/long-range, 3 round burst, critical hit bonuses, headshot weapon AUTO RIFLE - Think AR, short/mid range, full auto, critical hit bonuses, CQB rifle HAND CANNON - Think Magnum on Steriods, short/mid range, single shot, big critical hit bonuses, heavy damage Special Weapons SNIPER RIFLE - Sniper, long-range, single shot, huge critical hit bonuses, headshot weapon FUSION RIFLE - Think overcharged plasma pistol...kinda, mid/short-range, single shot that requires charge, has spread, heavy damage Shotgun - Shotgun, short range, single shot, Heavy Damage Heavy Weapons Rockets - Rocket, short/mid-range, single shot, splash damage, crowd control weapon Machine Gun - HMG, mid/short-range, full auto, heavy recoil, heavy damage
Loot System Just like Diablo. Loot is personalized. Each player gets their own drops/chests/money/etc. You can find or buy encrypted items that can only be revealed back at the tower, just like Diablo had with undiscovered items. You can win loot from MM games, and AI enemies in all modes can drop it. The bigger the bad guy and the harder the difficulty, the better the loot. Matchmaking: Destiny vs Classic Halo vs Everything Else On the competitive matchmaking side of things, I was hoping to see the true successor to the Halo series that I did not think Halo 4 was. Having played tens of thousands of games of Halo matchmaking, it has long been my preferred style of play. I will try to explain how I think it measures up to the classic Halo experience, and where it does not. To summarize, I will say that this isn't the same Halo experience I thought it would be, but that is kind of a good thing, so far. You definitely feel some classic Halo in the movement, weapons, vehicles, and skill gap, but Destiny also has some of it's own things going for it as well. Movement Destiny has the floaty jumping and movement of previous Halo games, along with the quick side-to-side strafing. Destiny adds a couple things to the traditional Halo movement options. Sprint comes standard, as does the ability to double jump (slight variations to the jump based on class). By sprinting and hitting th crouch button, you can slide, while still being able to fire, which makes for an insane looking kill if you can pull it off. Crouching and jumping at the same time is gone. In the alpha, no assassination animations, not sure if they are planned for release or not. Destiny also has a personal fast travel vehicle at your disposal at all times, you just have to take the time to call it. Like your own personal Halo Mongoose, but only a single seat. Kill Times Kill times are a bit faster than previous Halo games. Which feels just about right. You have longer encounters than are typically found in games like Battlefield or CoD, so there is enough time for someone to change the tide of battle with well-placed, fast-paced critical hits. So far, not a lot of encounters end with no kills. Melee Bleedthrough It would appear that there is no melee bleedthrough. Two melees needed to kill an opponent that has any shields. bAsed on only a single encounter where I had low health and shields were just starting to recover. I was meleedand survived. Might have been a freak accident or misremembered, but I don't think there is melee bleedthrough. Bloom You may or may not see reticule bloom in this game, depending on the sights on your weapon and if you are scoped in. However, the effect still exists. When not scoped, jumping, or while firing fast, your accuracy will be reduced. Map Control In the alpha, the only game available is control, which is much like a classic Battlefield gametype, where your team must control territories to score points. This gametype forces map movement and control if you want to win. Ammo and vehicle spawns also force some movement, but are pretty readily available without too much work. Not sure what will be done in other gametpes to reward smart map control. In the past, weapons forced map strategy, now that you bring all the guns you want (not sure if this will apply to all gametypes), I think we'll have to wait and see how that is handled. Spawns All spawns seen in the Alpha are Dynamic. For the most part, you aren't going to get readily spawn killed. I did see some instances where one team held all territories and were spread out that forced the losing team to spawn in vulnerable areas. Gametypes Only gametype shown so far in the alpha is called Control. In this mode, capturing territories, getting kills, and getting assists award points. The more territories you control, the more points you get for kills. Time limited, not score limited. Hit Detection Hit detection in Destiny appears to be pretty tight, with client side checking, just like Reach. Client-side hit detection helps account for lag, but it does result in some interesting mutual kills. Aim Assist Similar to past Halo games, someone running across your screen in range will drag your cursor a bit. The Golden Triangle Destiny PvP stays true to Bungie's Golden Triangle design philosophy. Grenades, melee, and guns all work together as they always have. Encounters Destiny features what I consider classic Halo encounters. Extended gunfights with time to throw nades, try to escape, or close to CQB. It allows you to be effective in whatever style you wish to play, but seems to reward the more challenging maneuvers. Not like modern shooter where outcome is almost always decided by person in the best position when they make first contact. Skill Gap Just like in past Halo games, in Destiny, if you can work as a team and make smart control decisions, you win games. Like in past Halo games, if you can pull off amazing headshots, you can kill a rushing CQB player trying to close. In Destiny, it is even easier to take out vehicles without heavy weapons. I don't know what all else skill gap means to people, but to me, it seems like Destiny has a healthy one. To demonstrate the Skill Gap, I include a couple videos. First, My first Scout Rifle. This video shows what happens when you square off against various other weapons with the precision headshot weapon, the Scout Rifle. If you land your shots, it outclasses most other guns, just as the BR used to. Second, A dominating performance shows how teamwork and skilled gunplay dominates the game, easily taking out vehicles and keeping the other team at bay. Randomosity For me, a big part of Halo's MM wasthe random moments of true awesomness that occur when just the right circumstances line up. Whether it be a cone kill, death from impact of a thrown grenade, Warthog splattering a whole team in a bubble shield, etc. Destiny brings the random moments of sheer joy just as any Halo games did. A grenade throw does inflict damage. Haven't seen it claim a kill yet, but it is possible. You have vehicles that travel at high speeds and explode, and plenty of ramps to launch them off of. But the best moments I have seen are the special abilities. Sometimes the enemy teams groups up so tight around an objective a single nova bomb can kill them all. Sometimes they will all file out of a building in a line right into your sniper scope. Those are the noteworthy experiences that stick with you from game to game. Closing Statements Keep in mind before you lose your mind over something you see in here that doesn't suit your highness, it is all subject to change this early on, and I might be flat out wrong about things. Think before you freak out. All that said, the Destiny Alpha is the only thing keeping my PS4 from being a $300 paperweight. I bought it because last year at E3, Bungie said it would be the console to play Destiny on. Having gotten a couple weeks to taste just a small sample of it, I'm excited as I was for Halo 3 to come out back in my twenties. It's got the addicting loot of Diablo, the space Opera story like Mass Effect, and as much classic Halo in PvP as you will find in games actually called Halo these days. And that is just what they are willing to show us in May. I think any fan of past Bungie games will find a lot to enjoy in Destiny. 1 ReplyThank you for sharing these. I enjoyed each one and watched a couple twice. They gave us a good glimpse into the new game we're dying to play.
-
Just watched some of the footage and I am freaking pumped. It looks like it's retained the feel of Halo even though there are some significant tweaks. Seeing people use what seems like the Halo sniper rifle filled me with glee and got me all riled up. Can't wait for the beta.
-
You're totally better than Ninja, man.

1 ReplyNow, Destiny is the exact example of what will happen to future gaming. All online. Only single player. They will force us to buy multiple televisions, consoles, and disks in order to play with our friends and families. This is the future. They will begin to leave last-gen consoles behind, and nothing will be in their way. We may be gamers, but truly, we have no power on our own. We need to band together, and bring the fight to them! This is a very nice informative post.

2 RepliesVery nice Obi, I read Firestreams post about his experience in the Alpha, and he linked your post here about your game experience. Everyone’s post about how Destiny's game play (and what game it kinda plays like) has me ready for it. I really have been looking for a game that will let me play competitively when I want to and then just relax and roam if I need to vent. Thanks again bud.

2 RepliesEdited by WrathOfTheRoyal: 6/11/2014 12:37:03 AMNice post, I appreciate your time put into it but the footage doesn't really excite me - no offense to your gamestyle but it's just not exciting to watch that scout rifle looks incredibly boring. I get the playstyle, it's just not my type. Didn't really get to see any supers unfortunately, that I know of either. My main question is the sandbox. Please tell me that the sandbox is not going to be like halos one-gun-game mentality? That is the last thing i feel like experiencing for another 10 years to be honest. I want a nice diverse sandbox with every weapon viable and effective in their own niche. If the game ends up having a utility gun the hype is just going to flop for me. After seeing that, may have decided that I don't want to be the hunter, and may go with the Titan for multiplayer, at least. I'm appealed by the hunters edgewalker focus - which I assume will be more fun to use in the co op side of things.
-
Wicked awesome info. Thanks so much for sharing!
-
Nice! Thanks for sharing.

Nice aerial snipe at 0:38 in the first Scout Rifle vid. A well written review throughout.

Nice.

2 RepliesObi I swear you always get stuff early. I'm glad to see some sniping footage. This is probably too early to ask but have you played MM against somebody that is a higher level than you (Better gear/weapons)? How fair was it, playing against a person with better gears etc? It looked like you got a couple kills when the other person was behind a wall for an example that last kill on the highlights video. Does that happen pretty often?

Great insight into the games rough work. Glad you we're able to share!! Sounds worth the wait!
