After the 5th BSOD in the last two months, 3 full blown PC Freezes and countless computer ghosts I'm about ready to throw this thing out of the fecking window.
My dad says that we should reinstall windows first before launching into Tech-Heresy/Destruction (My words, not his) but yeah...
So, I'm wondering if anyone here has had to do something similar before. How did you back everything up? Cookies for example for myriad of websites/passwords etc or stuff like Steam and Minecraft and soooooo much shit like that.
A lot of the stuff on here is relatively modular/self contained like my MP3s - I can just put the CDs in again. PC Games - I can put the disks in again. Word documents/work - Copy/Paste spam over the LAN.
The bit where it gets messy and frustrating/worrying is stuff like my Steam Library, Fallout/Skyrim/Nexus Mod folders and Skype etc.
All the internet related stuff...
Can I transplant it to my new/rebuilt computer or is this going to be a botched lobotomy.
Help meh ppls pls <.<

Ok so I've spent the last hour updating my graphics drivers despite windows assuring me a month ago that they were up to date. I guess the moral of the story is that you have to check everything manually and relying on automatic updates is dumd. >:v Hopefully this fixes the ghosts in my computer.

Windows has a process for creating a backup automatically, just get some discs to write to and look up how to do it.

5 RepliesTransfer everything you want to save to an external hard drive...I generally do that as I accumulate stuff. Also, if it happens again, find the error code it gives you on the blue screen and see what's up with it (I may be able to help some, when I have more time).

3 RepliesEdited by SuperIrish: 5/11/2014 8:27:25 PMBack up? Err...I've done those before... <.< | >.>
-Blam!- I really should've done one of those...
Take my advice with a grain of salt as I haven't done this sorta thing before, but with internet stuff being largely stored on the internet (apart from login details and bookmarks), I'm sure your Steam Library would be fine if you just redownloaded it from your new computer, assuming you've bought them and remember the password to the account (although free-game periods like the L4D2 and Rising Storm free game days might be unable to be redownloaded). Skype is the same, just download onto new computer and login again. As for mods for games, you'd have to find them all either from the internet sources where you got them, or from wherever you put them (a "mods" folder or whatever), and then reinstall them after moving the games and mod folders over to the new computer. The only problem I can see here is if you've forgotten login details - usernames and passwords. If your computer is still running fine for now, I'd suggest password resets (and write them down somewhere) so you can login to the places on the new computer to download the games/ skype contacts and whatever else. But again, I'd take my advice last, if no-one else gives a more expert answer.

2 RepliesHonestly when this happened to my computer, I uninstalled all windows/motherboard/graphic card driver updates. But that's because it was my graphics card causing the problem.

1 ReplyGet a backup drive and move everything on there, then reinstall Windows, and restore the files from the backup.
-
1 ReplyWhy not just move them on to an external hard drive or flash drive?

hate it when things just go committing sudoku. Don't got time for those numbers, especially when they're suicidal. related, I have no idea.
-
1 ReplySave the hard-drive, and go to computer man to "back it up."
