Is Lord of the Rings racist?

Yes

20

No

55

All the good humans are white people... while the Arabic looking people are on the side of Mordor. There is not a single black person in the movie, but the movie depicts white skinned and blonde people as superior (elves) while the dark skinned and black haired people are depicted as inferior (orcs). It even says that the orcs are a degenerated form of elves.

  • Tolkein's writing was eurocentric, and drew heavily from Europen legend and mythology. The areas he wrote about? Based on europe. To call him racist for that is silly. It's like saying the legend of King Arthur is racist for only having English characters.

I know this is a shitpost, but I'll answer anyway. The West had in it, the 'good guys'. The East, the 'bad guys'. To the east, is where the men who sided with the bad guys were pushed off to when they were being bad. The East is where the really hot climate is in Middle Earth. It's natural for people living in those climates to be dark skinned. Therefore, no. LotR isn't racist, that's just the way shit is.
That's the reason I had a real problem with black actors in Esgaroth in the Desolation of Smaug. Inconsistencies on top of inconsistencies.
You forgot the part where the dwarves are Jews. I don't think any of it is racist, though. I think people think too hard about racism.

      • I think you might be the racist here... Tolkien originally depicted the Orcs as -godwinslaw!-'s.

        • Well it is based on Tolkien's Anglo mythology. Basically it's his version of British mythology so white people will be the most prominent. It'd be the same for any Norse mythology movie bar Marvel. Now if it was based on Greece, Rome, or any other part of the world it'd be different.

        •
It even says that the orcs are a degenerated form of elves.
Nowhere in the text does it ever explicitly state this.

How about fantasy. Morgoth twisted the elves into Orcs due to him being an entity that chose to embrace his hated and darkness. That doesn't imply skin pigmentation. It means the damn void between the stars and the absence of light and a sense of hatred for a race his brothers and creator cherished over him. Africans and African Americans would get just as skewered as whitey if Morgoth was actually real. I'm sure somewhere in Middle Earth, Black Heroes were up to their necks in Orcs and Trolls. If not, they would've been the minute the men of the north got conquered.

        • It's also sexist because the entire Fellowship is composed solely of men, the two Towers are phalluses, and the King is obviously a man too.

          • Kinda. I don't dwell on it, though. The story isn't trying to send a racist message, and that's all that matters.

          • Y'know what the real problem here is? The fact that the elves aren't impaled on spikes and left to rot. Hate those prissy bastards.

Well, racism was widely spread in Tolkien's day. I question whether he was racist, but generally placing the Easterlings and Haradrim under Sauron's rule made geographical sense.

I don't think it is. It sort of reflects the racism and views you would see in ye olden times but it was about races coming together and getting over their prejudices. Gimli and Legolas become friends despite their early racist views and Aragorn and Arwen fall in love with each other and get married. I think it used light's association with good and dark's association with evil. Does that make True Detective and everything else that uses that model racist too?

            • it is. all of the races think that they are better than all of the other races. it's the definition of racism.
