why would he be fired for being unable to corral a bunch of whiny teens?

Not so much that. Rather that he sucks at managing the community. And made a bunch of changes that resulted in the decline of the community. You see it all the time in big companies. A person with a big job underperforms repeadetly and the board members start to want them out.
