Think about it, many franchises such as Sonic failed to make the transition to 3D because they couldn't just put everything in a 3D space. Games like Mario and Zelda reinvented their formula with Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time.
Now, however, it seems like Nintendo is taking the 2D platformer formula and simply translating it to 3D. Exploration is non existent, characters aren't even there, and levels are burned through in a few minutes rather than revisited with different and diverse goals each time.
This is one of many reasons I'm upset with Nintendo. Their gimped hardware pisses me off, sure, but as long as there are good games I'll still buy their system. But as of late Nintendo is half assing their products.

It was different but why not make it full 3d baffles me.

4 RepliesIf you think this is the end of Mario 64 type Mario games as we know it, then you're just not thinking hard enough. It seems like you think this is how the how the 3D games will be like from now on, which I highly doubt.

1 ReplyI enjoyed playing 3D World with my siblings :)

13 Replies3D land was great. Easily the best Mario game since 64. Its the reason why I bought a 3DS, and it did not disappoint. 10/10 Would buy it again if I lost my copy.

14 RepliesYes. So much yes. How they managed to get something so perfect with Galaxy(2) and then -blam!- it up so badly I have no idea

3 RepliesJesus christ make up your mind, first you bitch about zelda going too far from the "formula" then you whine about Mario going back to it's roots with an updated look at it. seriously, I think you're complaining just for the sake of hating anything new by nintendo at this point.

2 RepliesThey already said they are working on a Mario game that follows the 64/sunshine/galaxy 3d Mario style. 3d world was not that game...

3 RepliesEdited by TigerTitan: 4/4/2014 9:13:56 PMThe only Mario games that I even care about are the 3D ones. I think the 2D games are pretty boring. I find the 3D games to be more enjoyable, but Super Mario 3D World is the only 3D one that I've played. It doesn't seem like a step backwards. It seems like they're just trying to add a variety of games to the Mario franchise.

2 RepliesWhat are you talking about? Mario has never reinvented its formula. Mario 64 plays exactly like a 3D Mario Bros game, and it's amazing.

Nah. The thing is, 2D platformers are not obsolete. They're just a different way of doing things to 3D games. Given that, a 3D game in the style of a 2D platformer can't be a step back - it's just a hybrid of sorts. I like 3D Land and World precisely because like the 2D games. The levels are fast-paced and focused on platforming, but in three dimensions. They could stand to be a little harder, though...

So much horrible logic. I guess only the hardcore Nintendo fans are clicking this thread because nobody else cares anymore. At this point even I'm almost done caring.

2 Replies3D World is the best current gen game.

6 RepliesEdited by nao: 4/4/2014 7:30:36 PMNo. Its not the same series so how can it be a step back? 3D World is probably the best game on Wii U right now, and a nice throw back to old-school mario while still being innovative with the gameplay. 3D land is a 3ds game (and not nearly as good), so the comparison there makes even less sense to me.

1 ReplyThe game was a lot of fun, so no, I like how they did it.
