What a bland world gaming would be then. Don't get me wrong, I love to play multiplayer games, but a lot of the time I just like to sit down and play a game with a good story.

24 RepliesIt depends on the game. Games like Bioshock have stories to draw you in. Without a story they'd be pretty boring. The stories are there for you to experience. The stories are the experience. Games like Dark Souls are pretty much gameplay based. The story is kind if just pushed to the back seat. The gameplay is the experience in these type of games.

2 RepliesGames live off of MP. But they get remembered for their story mode.

IF games abandoned story telling, Halo would just be another shooter. KOTOR would be another star wars game. Oblivion would be a action game. IMO, storytelling over gameplay any day. Maybe why I prefer RPG's and adventure games. But sometimes I do agree that there needs to be a balance between the two many games lack these days.

A game with a mediocre story but great gameplay is better than a game with mediocre gameplay and a great story. That is especially the case for games with stories that easily could be told in the form of a movie or book. I was kind of annoyed by how much praise the Last of Us got this year. It has an amazing story but there is no need for me to buy it. I can gain the same experience by watching a commentary-less play through of it on YouTube. An exception to this is something like the Stanly Parable. It is a story more so than a game but it cannot be told in any way other than in a video game format. That game uses gameplay (or at lest consumer interaction if you do not conciser it "gameplay") to deliver its story. If games are going to be story-heavy than can at least be like SP or Mass Effect where the player can have some CONTROL in it. Control is the one thing that separates video games from other forms of media. If a game offers limited control, then it might as well just be a movie.
Story is far underrated in my opinion. A game could have the best gameplay in the world, but if its story completely and totally blows ass I won't like (probably). If a game has weak gameplay, but an amazing story then I will probably like it.

For the most part no but it comes down to what game you're playing.

Depends on the game For example, I think Bioshock Infinite has a really overrated story

9 RepliesSome games need good stories to function, others don't. It really depends on what the developer wants the audience to get out of the game.
Is story overrated in games overrated?
No, but overrated games with overrated story rates are overrated.

I really enjoy the BioShock series and BioShock 1 is my favorite game of all time, I find their stories really fascinating.

1 ReplyEdited by Hovris: 3/23/2014 6:32:06 PMDepends on the game. I find Gone Home extremely overrated, but The Walking Dead is one of my favourite all-time games. I do think that without storylines, the games industry would be much more boring. I wouldn't have gotten into Halo were it not for the story, equally so because of the gameplay too. It's how the different aspects of a video game come together that make it good or bad, overall.
