Titanfall Brute Review

Not doing a video. That comes next week for the new Metal Gear Solid and then InFamous. __________________________ Not many giant releases these days on the Source engine. Valves creation has been passed around more times than a $20 whore on a Friday night, but with great reason. It does shooters very well! As we all know Titanfall is the first game from the former CoD guys since their departing, and its pretty fun! Just don't expect a great campaign, or original game modes. Titanfall's campaign tells both sides to this war by means of characters popping up on screen mid battle. You also get these little in game scenes that hardly mean anything and just serve as another countdown timer until you can run free. While the idea of giving meaning to a multiplayer game is awesome, the execution is terrible. Exactly how are we supposed to pay attention to all of this dialogue while we are jumping, wall running, exploding, shooting and running... When you're sucked into the game, all you will literally hear is "blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah!" Why couldn't this have been handled in a different way? Like having the tone shift according to how good, or poorly your team in doing during that time, and NOT PLAY THEM SO FREAKING OFTEN!!! I honestly cannot tell you how the story goes in Titanfall. Why? Because I only heard about a 1/3rd of the whole thing, because I was you know--KILLING THE OTHER PLAYERS! The typical storytelling of single player is not going to cut it for a multiplayer game. You have to find a different way to get your information across to players, while they are working with their team, killing, and dying. Another disappointing things, is that every mission is pretty much just the regular game modes thrown in. Like attrition is team deathmatch, hardpoint is territories, and so on. There is not one fresh idea in its bones here, nothing that adds flavor to the mix. It reminds me of Spartan ops in Halo 4 (the first season). It has potential! Don't get me wrong there, it just needs a lot more attention before another running. Thankfully the game plays great during those times. Every level is filled with AI controlled characters for you to farm kills, and spotting pilots is easy when you observe their actions. It is also pretty cool to land a pilot kill when you're wall running with a smart pistol. It takes some getting used to on the PC with pilots wall running and jumping all over the place. The erratic movements can be tricky when aiming, which makes having your sensitivity at the right spot a necessity. Farming the AI characters and players will decrease the amount of time it takes for you to deploy your titan. And boy oh boy are they awesome! I tend to stick with the Ogre class since I love to do some damage and charge into the thick of battle. Also, when your titan falls into the "Doomed State", boosting close to the enemy and ejecting will cause it to go Nuclear. Flying high into the air and watching it create a massive boom, killing everything in its path is awesome! And it only gets better when you land on the back of another enemy titan and destroy it. Titanfall does fulfill one purpose flawlessly, it makes you feel like a total badass. And doing badass things like that will earn you Burn Cards. They are one time use cards that give you boosted weapons, perks, etc. They add a neat dynamic to the game and can pull you out of a death streak. Amped Smart Pistol and Packet Sniffer FTW! I really wish that the game had unique game modes! Not just the usual deathmatch, CTF, territories, etc. There is not really that much to play in a MULTIPLAYER ONLY GAME! If you're seriously going to charge us $60 for this with a low amount of modes, then you better bring it with the DLC! Last Titan Standing is essentially just elimination, give us something fresh and something that is unique to your IP! The game may feel like Call of Duty discovering cocaine, and that can be a honest comparison. It plays very similar to it, just without all the flying crap and mechs. It even manages to look pretty good on the Source engine. It does not look similar to games like Insurgency, Half Life or Counter Strike, and can run with relatively low hardware. Even playing with all settings to Low, the game looks pretty good. I do wish however that it is better optimized for my nVidia card. My specs surpass its minimum requirements and it cant seem to hold 60FPS and low and medium settings. Which just leads me to believe that its optimization is not up to snuff. But hey, atleast I can adjust my FOV! Titanfall is really fun game from end to end. Its campaign sucks, and there are very little game modes. But still, I cannot deny the fun to be had. SCORE: 4/5

  • Hmm good and accurate review. Everything you've said here is true and it's a shame that it's limited in some ways. I have it on Xbox One and a lot of fun is being had.

  • Pretty good and accurate review. I enjoyed the campaign and only wished it was longer and slightly better in terms of what's going on. It has potential though. Would like to see an expanded campaign in the DLC. However I agree that some of the stuff that happens I'm game just makes you feel like a beast. The only thing I didn't like is CTF. Now I usually like that game mode and there is some fun moments in it , but it promotes camping (defending) which does not fit in to this game.
Titanfall does fulfill one purpose flawlessly, it makes you feel like a total badass.
I have to agree with this. And that's what stood out for me the most. Dem feels. They're really important. Sadly I'm burnt out on multiplayer FPS. So maybe when it's cheap I'll buy it. I was pretty much a full-on FPS junky. So it was pretty obvious the time would come where I got burnt out. And it doesn't help when every year FPS are just becoming more and more stale. Now I just stick to RPGs. I can't get sick of that genre.

      • I agree with most of this. The campaign was alittle hard to pay atte tion too with the games in progress. But I definitely feel like a badass when I'm wallhanging and I kill a titan! I agree with the 4/5 score. Pretty acurate. Also I respect that you didnt fly off the handle about everything like most people. +1 to you mate.
