Sword Duel between a Rapier and a Katana
What would win?
Oh, it's no bother asking you lot since it happened.
Portugese 40 Spanish soldiers armed with Rapiers and Daggers fought a Japanese force 1000 or so strong
Spanish took 10 to 20 casualties while Japanese losses were in the hundreds.

This is the only battle to ever take place between European Swords and Katanas.
So, I guess Rapiers really are the better dueling sword, and European Fencing proved to be better than Japanese Martial Arts.

I had the thought that this might of been the result coming in. Katana's are slicing weapons, Rapiers are nimble thrusting weapons, which usually give you good reach and flexibility when fighting. Can't comment on a typical stance or use with a katana, but I had a guess Rapiers would of one. Seems like there might be a big gap in experience between the two groups though, or excellent planning.

A Katana isn't made for sword vs sword really. So this isn't really surprising.

Katanas are not made for blade-blade fighting(more flat-side parrying lest the blade shatter), rapiest swords are. though for looks and function, you have to go with the Scottish Broadswords or Ceremonial Sabers.

1 ReplyEdited by M37h3w3: 2/19/2014 10:48:30 PMDammit KK, you and that article are doing a shit job at presenting the facts to conclusive prove that Katanas got butt reamped by Rapiers given how there's a lack of citation over even the most basic fact that the battle was fought between 'musketeers, pikemen and Spanish rodeleros against Japanese Ronin (masterless samurai), and to a lesser extent, ashigaru (foot soldiers).' Assuming it's true the Japanese got shit on because it wasn't katana verus rapier but katana versus ship board cannons before being boarded and being forced into a katana verus pikes backed up with arquebusiers and muskets battle. Then later on katana versus entrenched positions with the same above weapons. Yes the Japanese had some muskets but apparently they didn't have many or failed to use them. Who the true victor is in the katana versus rapier battle comes down to how well both users could react to the tactics the other would be utilizing as well as the defenses of both.

1 ReplyHalf of your troop vs. Maybe a third or fourth (Didn't specify). This is also the assumption that it was only against rapiers, which was untrue. They had muskets, and from what I remember, people with guns usually kill people with a melee weapon.

Well, yeah. Katanas are just swords. Remarkably short swords, at that. Rapiers are longer, which makes them more ideal in a to-the-death fight.

1 ReplyI think it could have also been down to preparation and tactics, the Portuguese certainly did better than the Ronin in that regard, trenches and muskets, pikes and all that. Certainly interesting though, and it's always amusing to see peoples dreams shatter over the Grorious Nippon Steeru that is folded ten thousand times and thus is an unbreakable hory burade to smite the gaijin with.

4 RepliesYou assuming all of the deaths were from rapier vs katanas? I don't care which is better but something with actual information about the battle would be good. A lot of possible reasons the spanish did that well and the japanese so badly.
